Charles N'Zogbia looks set to complete his move from Wigan to Aston Villa before the end of this week.

A number of clubs were reportedly interested in the Frenchman's signature, including former club Newcastle. While that might have been purely newspaper speculation, the biggest surprise was the seemingly warm welcome which many members of the Toon Army seemed happy to give N'Zogbia.

With the move to Villa Park nearing completion, it doesn't look like we will get the opportunity to see the exact strength of public feeling towards the winger on Tyneside. But on the surface at least it seemed that the player's past misdemeanours had been forgotten.

Along with most teams, the Geordies can be an unforgiving bunch when it comes to former players who are perceived as having slighted or belittled the club. Just ask Jermaine 'Goldfish Bowl' Jenas.

When N'Zogbia left in January 2009 he went public in airing his grievances. There was the infamous fall out with then manager Joe Kinnear over the deliberate name mispronunciation, but he also said "every season is getting worse and worse" and that he needed "more exposure".

Of course, he got his move shortly afterwards and most Newcastle fans afforded themselves a snigger that the increased exposure was going to be at the DW Stadium (although N'Zogbia might have had the last laugh when Newcastle were subsequently relegated).

So, after his outbursts, why did it appear that N'Zogbia would have been welcomed back into the fold?

Have Newcastle fans decided that the shambles of relegation proved that N'Zogbia was right? Has the whole episode been put down to a personality clash with Kinnear?

Or was the prospect of a talented, pacy player joining the squad so tempting that most Geordies would have been happy to overlook his previously controversial exit?

Because he is a good player, who would have improved our team, he got booed during Wigan's 2-2 draw at St James in October.

Hmm ok, an answer to a question no one asked it would seem.

Probably the warmer than expected reception is a combination of a few things. We can understand how he would be unhappy to work under Kinnear, however that usually in itself wouldn't be enough. Our great need for the addition of a quality winger probably has had a big say in swaying people's opinions on having him back.
