Pompey’s post-Kenny Jackett era begins with a League One trip to high-flying Peterborough this evening (7pm kick-off). The manager left the club over the weekend after almost four years at the helm and with a couple of promotion near-misses – as well as an EFL Trophy triumph – under his belt. His assistant Joe Gallen is taking temporary charge of the team tonight, while the hunt for a new boss continues. And with the Blues trying to arrest their alarming run of form, they could not have asked for a much tougher test than a trip to London Road. The hosts are currently sitting second in the standings and have collected 10 more points than Pompey, who dropped to seventh over the weekend. But Posh are currently on a three-match winless run and have suffered successive defeats to Burton and leaders Hull. The latter loss came despite Reece Brown’s early opener on home soil at the weekend, with the Tigers ultimately triumphing 3-1. A youthful Blues side were thrashed 5-1 when the sides met in the Papa John’s Trophy back in January. But they emerged victorious in front of 2,000 fans at Fratton Park in the league the previous month, courtesy of goals from Jack Whatmough and Tom Naylor. TEAM NEWS Pompey will be handing late fitness tests to striking duo Ellis Harrison (knee) and John Marquis (ankle). Alex Bass (foot) is still out, while Callum Johnson is not ready to feature after returning to training following a calf problem, but Andy Cannon is available again. Peterborough will be missing Flynn Clarke (hip), Ronnie Edwards (thigh) and Jack Taylor (hamstring), as well as suspended midfielder Ethan Hamilton. HEAD TO HEAD Overall Pompey: 12 wins Peterborough: 10 wins 9 draws At London Road Pompey: 4 wins Peterborough: 4 wins 6 draws OFFICIALS Referee: James Oldham Assistants: Ian Smedley and Joseph Stokes Fourth Official: Declan Ford BETTING Peterborough are the 11/10 favourites with VBET to secure all three points, while Pompey can be backed at 13/5.
Very interesting. Almost matching Manchester City playing without an out and out striker. If only we could play like Manchester City .....!!! In theory, this should allow the midfield players to break into the box and get on the receiving end of a pass. It might allow for more mobility in Pompey's game.
Bizarre goal that was. Shame as we were looking solid if not threatening. Hopefully they don't panic.
Half time whistle. 1-0 to Peterborough, with an unlucky own goal as a Posh corner is pushed out by MacGillivray and the ball hits Rasmus Nicolaisen on the shoulder and ends up in the back of the net in the 32nd minute.....Jack Whatmough was shown the yellow card in the 41st minute for a shoulder charge on Siriki Dembele. Apart from the unfortunate own goal, we have played fairly well so far with Ronan Curtis looking lively up front, and Ben Close showing some decent touches.

Players are getting hammered on Facebook which I thought was a bit unfair. Yes it wasn't brilliant but they are low on confidence and are trying. 1 dodgy goal we would be level. If we score a goal it will make such a huge difference as will a new manager.
Reading between the lines on the BBC text, it seems Pompey were a lot better in the second half with some shots on goal and even a few on target. Still lacking that killer instinct. Glad to see Ben CLose having a match. I do feel Pompey have missed him to some degree as he can pop up and score goals. I feel the pressure may be off Pompey to some extent now that we are outside the play-offs as the pressure of being there no longer exists. Perhaps we put too much pressure on the players to get to the play-offs. Let them enjoy their football and they will deliver.
Final whistle. 1-0 to the home team, but what a vastly improved second half from Pompey. Marcus Harness replaced Andy Cannon in the 61st minute, then a double substitution by Pompey replacing Ryan Williams and Sean Raggett with Harvey White and Jordy Hiwula in the 73rd minute. We created numerous second half chances, but did not get the bounce of the ball. Yellow cards for Beevers for a foul on Marcus Harness in the 77th minute, and for Harvey White for fouling a Posh player in the 83rd minute. It was nice seeing Joe Gallen being so vocal on the sidelines instead of dear old Kenny's usual mannequin impressions !!

I know posh played rubbish tonight but parking two buses in the first half was poor agree you improved 100% second half but never really hurt is even tho you won most of the headers . cant see you even getting into the play offs way you played We was there for the taking some many injured players out
Much better second half. Lads really tried their best. Was some half decent play and their was a positive attitude and more pressure on the opposition. Finishing leaves a lot to be desired but hopefully we'll get a scrappy goal and they'll start flowing. Reading Facebook comments it really is apparent that most didn't actually watch the game or listen on the radio. Negativity is astounding! Facts are we did play better second half but the team is low on confidence and we need the new manager ASAP. That team is not completely rubbish. Right formation and we will start to get results. For me we must pick a manager who plays on the floor as that's clearly what suits our players.
Sharpe i watched the match and you really was shocking first half agree lot better second half but you need a good manager
They are low on confidence and we are short on forwards - certainly in form forwards. The performance second half gave a glimmer of hope for the future which is what was pleasing after the horror show of recent weeks. Thought you guys played well at times. Quite quick on the counter and you missed that absolute howler!
Your pitch was as bad as the last time we played you, poshfan !! You say we were poor this evening, but your attacking players were non existent - we even had to help you win the game with an unlucky own goal provided by us
It would hurt not getting to the play-offs, however if Pompey finish outside the Top 6, it means the cllub have more time to prepare for the new season. By then, a new manager may well be in place and would have sat down with the CE to work out a budget and playing needs for the season ahead. Being involved in the play-offs would delay that process. It looks like we are doing an "ipswich" from last season when they completely collapsed during the winter months after topping the table in the autumn. We have managed to replicate that. Good luck for the rest of the season and the possibility of play-off involvement as I feel Hull and Sunderland will get the two autos.
