Last six: Arsenal (H) Brighton (A) Palace (H) Brentford (A) Liverpool (H) Leicester (A) Tough start, but the run-in (although still tough) is slightly better reading.
Last thing we needed was a start as tough as that. Luckily for us, it seems as if our boys at the Euros are doing there best to come home as soon as possible to prepare for next season. Massive onus on the technical staff to recruit well and early, and for Ralph to sort this team out (again).
Would’ve preferred an easier start as if we could get a couple of wins early then hopefully last seasons form will be forgotten. Lose a few in a row early and could just be a “here we go again” type reaction. I don’t buy into this new season new start stuff unless there is big changes in the playing and coaching side
A potential positive of playing some of the bigger teams early is that their players will probably return to pre-season later than ours because of the Euros. That said, that will probably only apply to the first two - Everton and Man U - and teams like West Ham, City, Chelsea & Leeds will be well bedded in by the time we play them. On the down side it's a tough start, on the up side we get them out of the way early.
The start and run in both look pretty rough, so hopefully we have an easier run somewhere in the middle Or maybe all games look tough on paper because we aren’t very good
Obvious upside of playing Everton away first up is that the players may still be getting to used to the new manager's style of play.
It's better to avoid newly-promoted sides early on, and quite often big teams have a shaky start. Everton will have a new manager so that could be an interesting time to play them. If Wolves' new manager has a shaky start could also be good for us. There seems to be fewer and fewer 'easy' games each season these days.
Was thinking this when looking at the whole list. With the way we’ve played for most of the second half of last season, I can’t even imagine us outplaying most teams, or defending resolutely for 90 mins. My confidence in the team just doesn’t really exist atm. I guess that’s what happens when you go into last season as the most optimistic team, and end up in 15th.
It could be worse. Apart from the obvious bogey of Everton, Man Utd had a terrible start to last season, which might be repeated with most of their squad involved in the Euros. Then there’s West Ham. Surely they can’t be that good again? COYR, a new season, we can do this!
I'm also hoping the Europa League will start around the time we play them which might prove distracting.
Apart from getting in a few new players ahead of next season, we desperately need a huge uplift in the quality of our coaching staff. Something is clearly wrong with the way we capitulate so easily during games so a higher level of coaching might well be as important as any new players we sign? Just a thought.
I'm not too bothered about that IF we play like we did at the start of last season. The players will be fresh and better equipped to perform the fast tempo, high press game.
Last season took its toll because of the short pre season and packed fixture list, we should be better prepared to deal with fitness next season I believe.
