I'm undecided. Started off with Hayes as my number 1 candidate for the first half of the season. Now could be any one of the whole back four, though Sido injury probably rules him out.
I'm sure a case could be made for: Pierre Ingram Mawson Woods Hayes Scowen (but I would rule him out because he hasn't been part of this hectic end of season battle) Possibly others but those would be my main candidates
Wouldn't be surprised if Hayes wins after that late penalty last night, that took some balls knowing he had to score and could just make the difference in going up in the top 3 or not.
My first thought was for Pierre but I couldn't begrudge any of the others; it is that tight. Mawson is class, Hayes holds the team together and is a great captain, Ingram has made some World class saves to keep us in matches. I think I have just narrowed it down to 4. I think the last few games could decide it.
Mawsons been nominated for league 2 player of the season if that's trying to give us a hint! Would be ironic if he won it for the league but not his club! For me its between Mawson and Hayes, with the latters importance really being highlighted for those 6 games or so he was out injured and we all of a sudden struggled to score goals! Wood, JJ, ingram and Pierre would also be worthy winners in my book
Whoever gets it will be worthy winners with so many to chose from. If Ainsworth has to play on saturday could he be in with a shout? Yes i know i wanted him out but i can't be right all the time.
Personally I'd go with Hayes just ahead of Mawson. That rough patch that we endured when he was out injured after the new year really showed how much we rely on him, both as a player and as a leader. When he finally came back, results started to pick up again. Mawson is a very, very close second, he's been outstanding for the most part but there have been a few niggling errors here and there. I echo everyone else's comments though, it's fantastic that this award isn't just being handed on a plate to someone this season, you could make a convincing case for 5/6/7 players who deserve it.
I remember getting to Newport for the first game of the season and thinking, who the hell is this kid and how did he suddenly arrive at Wycombe. Couple of shaky minutes in the first half and he has never looked back. Considering he had never had a senior football league appearance up to that point - absolutely amazing
