They need to charge, asking with the police and fire service, those who drink too much and cause any form of issue. Violence, injury etc
Alcohol consumption costs the government and NHS more than smoking does. The taxes on smoking outweigh the costs to the country of smoking, whereas the taxes on drinking don't. I have no problem with the taxes on both being raised to raise more money for the NHS though. The only consideration is that taxes on smoking disproportionately affect the poor most whereas taxes on alcohol disproportionately affect the better off most.
Smoking should be banned full stop. Smokers are morons. My dad died almost 30 years ago from lung cancer caused by smoking. There is no reason these days to smoke or vape.
They should do everything within their means to make it as difficult as possible to start smoking. It gets more complicated when talking about people who have smoked all of their adult lives. New Zealand have brought in a new scheme. It will be interesting to see how that goes. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-59589775
I saw that but genuinely thought that was happening here! The problem is until it's banned full stop people will find ways around it.
I think there will always be people who find a way around it, in the same way they do with other drugs. It would definitely bring about a reduction though as most law abiding people wouldn't want to run the risk of breaking the law. I wish I had never started smoking. I say that I would love to stop smoking and in many ways that is true. However, if it was completely true I would stop. The psychological side of any addiction is far more difficult to overcome than any chemical or biological side. Prohibition works well as a deterrent (but not completely) in stopping people starting a habit but can be counter productive for those already with a habit. I don't know what the answer is, but wish I did.
Problem you would have is the difficulty in enforcing any ban. And secondly, the danger in creating a flourishing black market a la “the prohibition “. Although in theory I agree it is the start of a slippery slope we don’t want to go down.
I understand the people over 40 still smoking but people under that age really shouldn't be and It most definitely needs to banned full stop regardless of a black market. I like the new Zealand idea. In the long term it well become banned
There is also the fact that for many behavioural issues, the countries with the harshest laws or cultural norms also tend to have the biggest problems. A lot of that could be the effects of having a black market without the socially accepted support to overcome those habits. Two examples of this are seen in the US. They have a higher drinking age and a bigger problem with alcoholism. They have a far more prudish view of sex and nudity and much higher rates of teenage pregnancy and sexual offences. I think places with a more open view are also more able to educate better around the issues and that works better as a preventative measure.
Yeah there have been a few. Four footballers died of heart attacks in space of a week or something too elsewhere in the world (Xmas week). Marin Cacic, Mukhaled Al-Raqadi, Ahmed Amin, Sofiane Loukar. Just young lads. Does anyone know if the elderly person who collapsed at the Blyth Spartans game was alright? I couldn't see any update online. I think I read the guy at the Spurs game was ok.
