    what a load of bollox.

A tax on meat could prevent almost 6,000 deaths a year in the UK and save the economy more than £700m in healthcare costs, according to researchers.

A study has found meat taxes could save an estimated 220,000 lives globally by 2020 and reduce healthcare costs by £30.7bn.

Consumption of red meat such as beef, lamb and pork has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer.

Scientists wanted to calculate the level of tax that would be required to make up for healthcare costs associated with eating meat in 149 regions around the world.

The likely impact of a meat tax on death rates due to chronic disease was also estimated.

Consumption of red and processed meat was likely to cause 2.4 million deaths per year by 2020 and cost the global economy $285bn (£219bn), the study found.

The amount of meat tax required to make it effective varied from country to country.

So, don’t drink cos it’ll kill you. Now it’s steak, roast beef and lamb.

The idea is we all end up eating ****ing lentils and drinking mineral water.

Might as well top yourself now...

As a smoker I pay ****loads more in tax than it'll cost to keep me alive when i'm old and diseased. Doubt i'll make it to an old age anyways.

You meat-eating, planet-destroying ****s should pay even more than that in tax imho <ok>

    Need tougher sentencing?

A 98-year-old man who was attacked and robbed in his own home has been left fighting for his life.

Police are seeking witnesses after Peter Gouldstone was found in a semi-conscious state by his 67-year-old son Simon.

Officers were called to his home of more than 60 years in Evesham Road in Enfield, north London, at around 10am on Tuesday, after a neighbour noticed the back door was open.

A £10,000 reward has been offered to catch those responsible for a horrific attack on a 98-year-old Second World War veteran who is fighting for his life.

Peter Gouldstone remains in a critical condition following a robbery at his home in Enfield, north London.

His family released a picture of the former telephone engineer hooked up to a life-support machine in hospital, where he is receiving treatment for severe injuries - including two bleeds on the brain.

Police are yet to find those who attacked him during the violent break-in, which happened during a 20-hour window between 2pm on 5 November.

    Mainly down to internet shopping?

The crisis facing the high street is set to "intensify" after shops closed at a rate of almost 14 a day in the first half of the year, a report says.

It found store openings continued to lag the pace of closures in a period that saw several household names disappear and others seek emergency rescue deals to stay afloat.

According to the analysis of 500 high streets by accountancy specialist PwC and the Local Data Company, 2,692 stores were shut between January and June.

Just 1,569 started up - a record low, the report said, because of plunging confidence.

I'm not sure that internet shopping is totally to blame, but more the neglect of our High streets. If it was purely due to internet shopping then why are places like Blue Water absolutely heaving at Christmas and most weekends come to that. Have car can travel, if you are the poorer end of the scale, then the big companies along with the authorities don't care about you, as the High Street culture has been allowed to erode. The poorer customers might internet shop, save them catching a bus to a shhitehole town.
