Rees-Mogg? You are confident that whoever takes over from Johnson will bin him off? I mean even Boris didn’t give him a real cabinet post I guess

Not convinced JRM doesn’t get through the next election though. It would need a real Lib Dem surge to oust him

Once Johnson is out, I cannot see his successor tolerating Rees-Mogg in the slightest. Probably oñe of the most detested Tories within Tory ranks the length.and breadth of the country.

I sort of agree and don't agree. Actual print press is teetering on it's last legs. If people still go to the Mail and the Sun for their intake, rather than more unbiased sources, well the problem there is education of the masses.

So many people don't quite get how media is now forced to work in the digital age. The majority will promote the stories that get the most clicks, as it's how they earn what little revenue there is left in news. Hence why you get 'clickbait' articles. And also why you get all the idiocy around 'well you won't see this in the MSM' - you will, and you do (if you do a little searching), it just might not be on the front page of the site you choose, because that particular story doesn't get the most clicks.

It's a bit of a bind for the more unbiased and reasonable outlets like, for instance, Reuters and AP. They still need to run as commercial organisations, whilst abiding to things like the "Reuters trust principles" which prevent them from biased reporting and/or opinion. So whereas they may want to produce more stories about, for example, the recent devastating typhoon in the Philippines, they may not promote it as front page news, because people just aren't interested (another thing entirely).

The main thing is trying to educate people away from deeply opinionated news sites like The Sun, for want of a better example, and toward more source based news like Reuters.

The difficulty is that people aren't actually all *that* interested in news. They want to be entertained, so we get bullshit like pieces about Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly.

Labour are second in NE Somerset, JRM won it from Labour in 2010. It will need a Lib-Lab pact to get rid of him, which won’t happen.

And that's the pity. If the parties won't do it then there's a need for a campaign for tactical voting. Identify the candidate most like to defeat the tory incumbant.

Beyond his incoherence on Brexit, he also just struggled to really convince most of the populace that he would make a good PM.
If there's one thing that one of these uber-billionaires could do with wealth that would have a permanent, beneficial effect, it would be to establish a hands-off, non-profit trust to create and administer a network of regional newspapers. Non-profit is the only way forward for good news and in particular investigation journalism in this media environment (ProPublica, as an example, is excellent), but national organizations can only cover so much...you need a lot of reporters able to cover smaller stories at the local and regional level, because that stuff matters.

Speaking of good reporters, my father in law, Peter Taylor, did another report on Newsnight last night, fifty years on from Bloody Sunday. Including an interview with Lord Saville, who led the inquiry.

Is here on iPlayer if anyone is interested.

Reading the Labour member reaction to the Tory defection earlier this week and suddenly this is super relevant.

Anyone else keeping an eye on the potential war between Russia and the Ukraine?
Most of the world seems to be sitting back and monitoring the situation and with Ukraine not belonging to NATO, there is no obligation for NATO to get over involved.
The UK, meanwhile, has been supplying Ukraine with anti tank weapons and troops to train the Ukrainians in their use. It’s almost as if we want to be part of anything that might kick off there.
Maybe Johnson is looking for another distraction, even if it does put British lives at risk.
Here’s a link to the views of some people who know more about these things than I do.
