Pompey Academy returned to action with a 2-1 victory over Swindon in the Youth Alliance League at Furze Lane.

They took the lead when Dan Gifford (pictured) linked up with Harrison Brook and neatly converted his first goal of the season.

Alfie Bridgman then completed a quick counter-attack to double the lead, while Will King grabbed a late consolation for the visitors.

Professional development phase coach Liam Daish said: “It was our first game back for nearly a month and I was really pleased with how we started.

“The lads had looked after themselves over Christmas and a few of them were involved with the first team at Peterborough in the Papa John’s Trophy.

“They moved the ball about well and Dan got a good opening goal. It’s great to see him on the pitch and scoring after having a few injury problems in the first half of the season.

“Swindon asked us a few more questions after the break and we were forced to defend deeper and really dig in.

“But Alfie got the second goal on the break and it was just disappointing that we couldn’t quite hold on to keep a clean sheet.

“Conor Manderson has also had some injuries this season, but he was very assured and calm between the sticks.

“We looked a bit leggy in the final 20 minutes – which is not a surprise after so long without a fixtures.

“Overall, however, it was a pleasing performance. We were happy with how the lads returned to action against a Swindon side who always give you a tough game.

Pompey: Conor Manderson; David Setters, Issiaga Kaba, Dan Cadman, Harvey Hughes; Harry Jewitt-White, Charlie Bell; Kristian Dawson (Josh Dockerill 81), Alfie Bridgman, Harrison Brook; Dan Gifford (Archie Greenough 74)
