Pompey will end their Papa John’s Trophy Southern Group B campaign by hosting Crystal Palace’s under-21 side this evening (7.45pm kick-off). With defeats to AFC Wimbledon and Sutton in their opening two fixtures, chances of progression to the knockout stages are slim. It is not totally out of the question, although claiming three points against the Eagles is the absolute minimum requirement. The Dons would also need to be beaten at Sutton, while there also has to be a goal difference swing of at least four. Tonight’s visitors also know that victory would not necessarily guarantee a spot in the last 32 of the competition, although a single point could still be enough. Paddy McCarthy’s young team lost 3-0 to Sutton in their opening fixture, but responded with a 2-0 success at Plough Lane. They sit seventh in the top tier of Premier League 2, battling from behind to beat Chelsea in their last outing. If the game finishes level after 90 minutes, both sides will collect a point. A penalty shoot-out would then be held to decide who earns a bonus point. TEAM NEWS Danny Cowley has revealed there will be a mixture of youth and experience on display, with several academy players likely to feature in the matchday squad. Ellis Harrison (ankle), Jayden Reid (knee), Clark Robertson (hip) and Ryan Tunnicliffe (hamstring) are all sidelined. Paul Downing and Liam Vincent have both returned to full training, but this evening’s match comes too soon for the duo. So, two academy players in Harvey Hughes and Adam Payce are in the starting line-up, with seven more on the substitutes bench. Good experience for the youngsters !
Half time whistle. 1-0 to Pompey with a lovely goal from Miguel Azeez (his first for the club) in the 32nd minute. Could have had more. Two decent shots from George Hirst who has played well so far, and a superb effort from Michael Jacobs.

Final whistle. Pompey 3 v 0 Crystal Palace. Harry Jewitt-White came on for Louis Thompson at half time. Nice headed goal from Gassan Ahadme (his first for the club) in the 54th minute from a Kieron Freeman cross made it 2-0. 3-0 after 90 + 3 minutes, with a first Pompey goal from striker George Hirst, who to my mind had a great game, and was man of the match. We brought on youngsters Alfie Bridgman for Adam Payce in the 88th minute, and Izzy Kabba for Gassan Ahadme after 90 + 5 minutes. I understand that Pompey are through to the next stage of this much maligned trophy - sorry Lapras Very good game to watch, and an excellent Pompey performance.

That is more encouraging. It is a result that is in complete contrast to Pompey in the League. PS: How is it possible that Pompey qualified for the next stage given that we lost to Wimbledon and Sutton? .
1660 too many. While I can understand people attending matches against the other league one and league two sides in this competition even if I strongly disagree with it, attending a game against a premier league B team just seems ridiculous
Very strange rules, Ides !! We went through on more goals scored than AFC Wimbledon, despite the results in the two earlier games.
Yes, I was hoping after the last result we could get knocked out of this competition early, but I suppose Portsmouth mangers have often used this competition as a distraction from poor form in the league. On the bright side at least Farnborough won in a proper competition!
Pompey have been drawn away to Exeter in the second round of the @PapaJohnsTrophy. The tie will be played at St James Park in the week commencing November 29, with a confirmed date and ticket details announced in due course.
