Little did I realise that I would still be doing this season's match threads in the week that next seasons fixtures should have actually been released.

An interesting set of fixtures this week Bees v Baggies, Marching on Together against those from the Cottage and now added significance in out game against Cardiff.
Given our failure to beat a poor Luton side last week and the Bluebirds victory over Leeds, teams are now level on points.
First of all Cardiff were defensively impressive against Leeds last week although has to be said if Bamford is in the opposition you do stand a chance of keeping a clean sheet.
Was intially surprised by their lie up with the likes of Flint and Tomlin on the bench but the rest of them did a number on Leeds.
The first meeting at Cardiff we should have won but our shoot to miss policy was to the fore once again totally dominated the game which coincidentally was also on TV,
Have some fun Cardiff memories especially Mark Kennedy's magnificent diving own goal in a 6-0 hammering about 10 years ago when like now both sides were vying for the play offs. Over the years City have had some real hammerings at Deepdale 5-0 in 1996 and the 9-0 in the mid sixties although when beating us 1-0 at Deepdale which sent us down under Tango Man.
Will see seem seeing a home game via television, we are also on again on Wednesday against Direby.
One area which needs to be improved our use of substitutes Luton were intelligent with theirs last week ours added nothing.

For Preston North End’s first home game after the resumption of the Championship, referee Oliver Langford will be the man in the middle
It will be the match official’s second visit to Deepdale this season, having been the man with the whistle for our live TV game against West Bromwich Albion back in November, when a late penalty gave the Baggies the win.

The previous season, Oliver was in charge of three of our Championship matches in 2018/19. His last being the 1-0 derby day win over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, when Daniel Johnson scored the winner. The ref was also the match official at the end of January, as the Lilywhites triumphed 2-0 at the Bet365 Stadium against Stoke City.

Prior to that he refereed our Carabao Cup third round tie with Middlesbrough back in September and before that it had been 12 months since he last took charge of a game at Deepdale.

The West Midlands official, prior to the aforementioned Boro game, last took charge of another previous clash with Cardiff City at Deepdale in September 2017, when the Lilywhites ran out 3-0 winners against Neil Warnock’s Bluebirds.

The previous season he took charge of another three North End games. His first was the live Sky victory over Wigan Athletic back in September 2016, his second, our first match of the new year, at Burton Albion and his third the goalless draw away at Barnsley in February.

He also twice took charge of the Lilywhites in 2015/16; the goalless draw against Derby County, when goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard made his debut for the club, and the April trip to Middlesbrough.

His first game in change of North End before that was the clash with Swindon at the County Ground in November 2014.

This will be his first Bluebirds game of the season, having officiated 28 games, that have seen 112 cautions and four red cards so far.

He will be assisted by Phil Dermott and Jonathan Hunt, with experienced Championship match official Rob Jones acting as the fourth official for the game.

Most informative. Like the reference to a surprise to see Flint on the bench. The longer he stays there the better.

Can’t see many goals in this one notwithstanding the previous drubbings.
Gallagher always seems to do well v City whilst PNE missed Johnson’s presence at CCS.

I like any team that beats Leeds. Well done CC. But obviously not as much as NE.It has been a long wait to see the settling of this season's play-off places. A poor game against Luton could mean NE carrying on where they left off before the close down: losing. Let's hope not.

    Half time 0-0

One shot on target in the entire half that was from Ralls just before half time, lots of endeavour little end product from either side, Barkhuzen should have done better early on as should Hoilett for them. Possible shout for two penalties not given by Ollie. Pearson stand out for us by a long way, City well organised at the back.

    1-3 final score

Some utterly abysmal defending plus missing three sitters two at 2-1, Nugent's especially a big miss, will finish 12th this season.

Well were do you start, too pedestrian by half in the first half, the only time we looked to be in it the friggin drinks break stopped us in our tracks.
Second half better but you cannot defend like that all three were badly defended, at the other end distinct lake of quality, but Nugent's miss at 2-1 was critical. Which brings us to the front line they can't score, sorry Nugent should not have been signed, Maguire 1 goal in 30 matches pitiful although give his due he looked all right for the first five minutes after he came on. Stockley the service to him was crap given he was up against two very good central defenders.
Good knows what the likes of Harrop, and Bayliss have to do to get a game.
Derby next up not beaten them since we returned to the Championship

    Beeb's report

Cardiff City leapfrogged Preston North End to move into the Championship play-off places with a 3-1 win at Deepdale.

Substitute Nathaniel Mendez-Laing capped a fine team move to put the Bluebirds 2-1 up on 81 minutes, before Robert Glatzel made the win safe in stoppage time with a deflected finish.

Cardiff took the lead when Joe Ralls rose to head home Dion Sanderson's cross midway through the second half.

Daniel Johnson's 12th goal this season levelled the game four minutes later.

Cardiff move to sixth in the Championship, three points above Preston who sink to seventh and out of the play-off places.

Neil Harris' men deserved what was a hard-fought victory thanks to some decisive counter-attacks in an excellent second-half display.

It was the hosts who started the contest with a good tempo, happy to let Cardiff dominate possession and ready to tear at the Welsh side on the counter-attack.

They created a decent opening in just the second minute after smart work from Jayden Stockley allowed Tom Barkhuizen to shoot, but he dragged his effort wide.

Preston were unlucky four minutes later when Scott Sinclair wriggled free in the Cardiff penalty area and was clipped by Will Vaulks, with the referee waving away penalty claims despite replays showing a clear touch on the attacker.

The Bluebirds, who soaked up so much pressure in last week's 2-0 win over title contenders Leeds United, took a while to get going and their first good attempt did not arrive until 28 minutes, when Junior Hoilett lashed wide from just inside the area after the ball had fallen kindly.

They also came close on the stroke of half-time when Sean Morrison headed over from a corner, but Sinclair and Barkhuizen in particular were ensuring Cardiff could never switch off at the back.

As it happened in the Championship
Preston had the best chance in the opening exchanges of the second half when Sinclair's deceptive effort from 25 yards almost found the corner of the net, with Alex Smithies forced to make a smart, fingertip stop.

However, it was the visitors who were growing into the contest and exerting more pressure, and with 21 minutes remaining they found the breakthrough when Wolves loanee Sanderson swung in a teasing cross that Ralls headed home at the back post.

It was a terrific leap from Ralls who climbed above Darnell Fisher too easily, from a Preston perspective.

Cardiff might have made it 2-0 four minutes later, but Hoilett slammed wide after more good approach play.

However, the hosts levelled seconds later when Johnson produced a composed finish after substitute Sean Maguire drove forward and Alan Browne's shot was blocked by Morrison, with the rebound falling straight to the Preston forward.

Cardiff went back in front thanks to a lovely team move with nine minutes remaining, as a delightful touch by substitute Lee Tomlin freed Mendez-Laing, who finished emphatically.

Composed finishing was the key to this win as David Nugent blazed over with a huge chance to level, before Cardiff-born Preston defender Andrew Hughes headed at Smithies as the hosts looked to respond.

Another Cardiff substitute, Glatzel, made the win safe in injury time as the rain lashed down, with his effort on the counter taking a deflection and wrong-footing Declan Rudd in the Preston goal.

The goals by Cardiff's two substitutes took the Bluebirds' tally for the season to 15 goals off the bench, the most in the Championship

Not many neutrals would have stayed with that game after half time.
Was surprised PNE didn’t press more as on paper their midfield looked strong and balanced.
This is is a different type of City than pre lockdown; a very fit looking team, a tight central midfield supplemented by a strong bench.
The longer it stayed 0-0 the more it suited Harris who could time his [expected] introduction of NML, Glatzel & Tomlin.
On another day that finishes 2-2 but like versus Leeds, City had the breaks but also as in that game finished the better of the two teams.

Preston manager Alex Neil told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"I think our biggest frustration is we didn't make the best of our opportunities to hurt them

"The manner of how we conceded the first goal was disappointing and the second was also really poor defending.

"We got some great chances though after conceding those two goals and our endeavour to get back into the game saw us make some fairly strange decisions at key stages."

Cardiff City manager Neil Harris told BBC Sport Wales:

"It is a huge, huge win. We felt it was vital that we followed up last week's really impressive performance and result against Leeds with another solid one today.

"So [I am] delighted that we've played so well at times with the football and that we've got the three points.

"Ultimately at this stage of the season it's the points that matter, it's a big confidence boost. It pushes us in the right direction and dents the chances of a fellow promotion rival in Preston.

"When you're 1-0 up away from home, you're flying you want to see it out. But when you concede, to bounce back like we did to go on and score two really good goals, that's testament to my players."
