R.I.P. Peter. You were my boyhood hero. I have a vague memory of a football A-Z (probably in a Christmas week Shoot magazine) where "W" stood for Wall of Death. It featured a cartoon of players stood, knees-knocking, in a wall as Peter got ready to take a free-kick.
There are two fond memories i have of Peter Lorimer, The first was when i was a young lad watching from the corner of what is now the cheese wedge, there used to be a floodlight there and i used to stand on that and get a great view, Leeds was playing Liverpool and we had a free kick a few yards outside of the box, attacking towards the Scratching shed end as it was then, Lorimer placed the ball took a good run up and hit it, you heard the thud has it hit the wall, the wall broke except for one player.....Tony Hatley, he just stood there..... the ball ended up in row Z of the West Stand, Hatley fell backwards clean out, St Johns ambulance carried him off on a stretcher, funny as fck. The other was, a very close friend of mine is Gordon McQueens brother in law and McQueen loved hand pulled Tetleys, so we met in the Railway pub in East Ardsley and had a session, McQueen suggested we got a taxi over to Peter Lorimers pub in Leeds (also Tetley pub) we were in there while the early hrs, the crack was brilliant listening to their stories, never paid for a drink all night in there, bumped into him a few times after and he never forgot me, sign of a proper person, not stuck up his own arse, top top man. RIP Peter Lorimer, top footballer, genuine good person, you will be missed.
RIP Lash. My first game at Elland Road. My first goal watched. Peter scored that goal. Something I will never forget. Rest in peace fella. Your mates up there are waiting for you! A TRUE LEGEND OF LEEDS UNITED
found this that a scotch leeds fan did for me,as you can see in 1987 it was for all the great scotch players we had in the team in the 60's & 70's mostly he made it out of foil and put it in the frame for me....on a day like today thought i would put it on to share, for a fantastic player mr hotshot peter lorimer..you will be in good company up above "lash"
Its a great shame I always wanted to ask him 2 questions , 1 did he think it was a goal he scored and was ruled out for Billy Brenner supposedly interfering with play in the European cup final in 1975 and the 2nd question that all leeds utd supporters want to know is the rumors that the referee took a bribe in that game 1 goal ruled out and 2 peneltys shouts dismissed as that same referee was banned for life a few seasons later for taking a bribe in another match. I saw Peter lorrimer once in a bookies in leeds city center but was too shy at that age to go up and ask him and now will never be able to get the answer to 2 vital questions that alot of leeds utd fans want to know
Saddened to hear this news of Peter Lorimer’s passing. When I was a kid I used to collect those football cards that you got with a bit of bubble gum (older fans will remember) and was delighted when I got the Peter Lorimer one for the set. Never forgot what a great player he was. RIP from a QPR fan.
Sniffer himself would be able to answer the question no doubt. The referee never reffed again but I think he was retiring anyway, bribed as far as many Leeds fans were concerned but I thought he was banned for life same as the one in Salonika.
Cheers mate you answered it , I will have to check the 2nd question I'm not 100% on it I thought the rumors was he was banned for life for taking bribes in another match
Yes mate one of the greats of the game but leeds utd are starting to stir and the sleeping giant leeds are waking up once again it is a pity that lorrimer could not see it but he will have known leeds were coming back
What I do know for fact Sniffer is that after the game the spaghetti munching twats AC Milan goaded the Leeds players after the match and there was a big fight in the tunnel area, that was as per Peter Lorimer and Gordon McQueen, the officials stayed in their changing rooms, Don Revie banged on the door but could not get to them, all facts mate.
Can’t say I heard that before but that referee was definitely banned for life. The Greeks in the crowd already knew beforehand that he had accepted bribes hence their reaction at the end of the game. He arrived with the AC Milan team apparently. I do have a contact who can give me a first hand insight into the referee part if I need to check anything. I know I hung my scarf out of the coach window at the end of the game and all the Greeks were fighting to get it as a memento
yes leeds utd been conned a few times in matches , lets hope its our turn to get our own back and win the tropheys .
Let's hope it was a long, incredibly painful illness ..... Either that or he was fit & healthy before the Leeds supporter doctor suffocated him with a pillow. In Leeds colours, of course.
