WALTER SMITH was last night battling to bring in a loan signing to boost Rangers’ Treble hopes.

The departures of Pedro Mendes and Jerome Rothen have freed up cash to allow the Scottish champions to bring in a new face.

It is understood they have looked at bringing Manchester City midfielder Martin Petrov to Ibrox in what would be a sensational move.

    Electric

The Bulgarian cost City £4.7 million from Atletico Madrid three years ago, and is famous for his electric pace on the left side of midfield.

Only last week Smith bemoaned the fact his team lacked width in midfield, forcing him to play the likes of Steven Davis in areas where he’s less effective.

Although 31-year-old Petrov was unhappy under Mark Hughes, he returned to favour after the appointment of Roberto Mancini.

His contract is up in the summer, however, and Smith is not giving up hope.

“We are looking around to see if we can find someone,” he said.

“Pedro and Jerome moving on has freed a little bit of money, which is one of the reasons we came to the decisions to let them go.

“If we don’t have any success with the ones we want, though, we won’t just bring someone in for the sake of it.”

Back in central midfield, it was Davis who was Rangers’ matchwinner yesterday.

He was later hailed as the best player in Scotland by his manager.

“If there’s a better player in the country just now, I’m yet to see him,” said Smith.

“Steven has been exceptional for us since he came here.

“He is very consistent and lately has turned in some terrific performances that have been an inspiration to those around him.”

This is never going to happen. Especially now Robinho has left. Was never going to happen anyway, Petrov is on at least £50,000 a week at City before bonuses. If Rangers can afford half that for 6 months then they should be offering that money to Kris Boyd, not a loan signing.

    Paper talk that's all.

Load of ****e. A couple of non-starter stories with us being linked with unrealistic targets in an attempt to convince supporters everythings all good.

By the end of today it will be, "We just didnt have the time." or "The deal fell through at the last minute."

As long as nobody leaves the club before 5pm tonight I'll be happy.
