Yes. The only time I bet is when I go to a race track (once a year if I'm lucky) and then I only allow myself a fixed amount which is included in the budget for the outing (ie regarded as an expense). Any return merely reducing the budgeted cost of the outing. I must have a hundred things that are higher priority than risking money on betting

Government legislation to limit the maximum stake on FOBTs to £2

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-44148285

Patheic to read the bookmakers statements in this article, there really is no argument to defend the "crack cocaine of gambling"

One ridiculous statement from the bookmakers was their claims concerning the loss of jobs. This only a few years after they decided it was fine to have only one individual, mostly women, on duty at any one time in their outlets. F****n' crooks and mountebanks!

I work in a bookies and I hate those machines with a passion.
I have seen good friends lose a lot of money over the last few years.
Friends who have young families, and are not in particularly well paid jobs.
We are supposed to go to the players and ask if they want a coffee or have a break.
    Pathetic!

It got to the point where, I went up to a good friend and told him if he didn't pack it in and collect what he had in the machine, I would tell his missus.
He collected, and went out. He now comes in with his missus when the football season is over, and with her help, he only puts in a week what he would spend on the football bets.
He is a lot happier and less stressed now.
However, someone heard me giving him a bollocking and reported me.
I was spoken to by one of the area team for not following proper procedure.

Following on....this week we were told to read a letter written by some 'management person' and add our name to it if we wanted to protest to the government about their plans. The note ended by reminding us that we could lose our jobs if this proposal goes through, through lack of trade in the shops.

I like working in the bookies, but those machines are a total pain in the arse, and I for one, would be happy if they banned them altogether.

Why are bookies open from 08.30/09.00 to 22.00?

Seems to me the fixed odds machines attract way more people with societal problems than regular gambling on sport.

I use a bookies next to my work and there are guys quietly watching the races/tennis/cricket...

...then there are the type of guys who ask to borrow a fag off you - raging at the machine, stomping about the place and thinking everyone else is interested in how the digital roulette wheel is weighted against him shouting at the top of his voice - I now wear headphones when I go into the bookies for the same reason I wear them on my walk from work to Glasgow Central - I don't want to talk to zoomers and I don't want to justify why I shouldn't just give you something because you shout in my face for it.

The guys who work in my local bookies are all diamonds - mostly pretty young guys but the way they deal with the mad folk who now hang about betting shops (as well as the junkies who come in and rage and spit because they're not allowed to use the toilets) is pretty admirable.

Agree with all already posted. Did make me smile this morning though when the bookies were warning about the risk of UK bookies getting taken over by foreign companies. So far worse than uk bookies who register abroad to avoid uk taxes. Absolute fookin spanners.

Paddy Power seem remarkably calm about the reduction from £100 to £2.

Am I correct in believing that FOBT's do not exist in bookmaker's shops in the Republic of Ireland?

Dunno about that but when I was last in Ireland last summer, I noticed that they still have independent bookies shops (in small villages in Donegal at least) rather than, like my home town, a WH, Ladbrokes, PP and Betfred on every main road and nothing else.

Right decision and fair play to the Tory government, thought they'd bottle it. And as previously said they can't use BS like job losses when they've already cut them to the max and are pretty much cluttering shops with self service betting terminals anyway.

One thing i don't understand though is Roulette etc is being cut to £2, so you can't spin more than £4 a minute is it? But slots were already a maximum of £2 stake, and a slot spin is about 5 seconds so there's still a lot that can be lost there, however it's a step in the right direction and you should lose a lot of these young yobs that want a quick buck or dickheads thinking they can beat the machine and win 100's of pounds. Whereas now the most they can win will be £72 ?

I just don't get how it affects the slots side though, will they get limited or the jackpot changed for them as technically the max win on roulette would be £72?

Still very confusing, they have until the end of the year to change the technology don't they?

I also felt they should have imposed an addition ban on the # allowed as well, instead of 4 make it 1-2. But as i said above step by step, even if it saves 1 more person or steers one more person away than it would have done it's a success.

Just heard a representative of the bookmaking industry on a financial show at 18.30 on Sky News.

This gentleman made two unbelievable comments which were not challenged. I paraphrase:

This action will reduce our profits by 50% thus making our shops unprofitable. I understand that the bookmaker's high street outlets are not their only source of income however give me a f****n' break!

He further stated that if the maximum stakes on FOBT's had been reduced from £100 to £30 per spin we would have done more to alleviate the harm caused. So the bookmakers accept that harm is currently being inflicted by the FOBT's and, if the government had acceded to their argument, more could/would be spent to help problem gamblers. How f****n' magnanimous of them!

Looks like I will have to quit the day job... it is now going to take me fifty times as long to launder all my drug money at £6 a minute instead of £300.

Pardon the factual racist stereotyping here but I only seem to see three sorts of character on the FOBTs when I go in the local betting emporia: old Chinese guys (the sort who also seem to enjoy betting on ‘virtual’ racing because it is just random numbers), groups of young black men (who seem to go from one place to the next in a pack) and scruffy tramps in Primark shell suits.

As a sometime early morning drinker in Leith's 'breakfast' bars I notice many of my fellow AM imbibers, if I should require a quick read of the Racing Post, in the three bookies (Hills, Ladbrokes Corals) within a minutes walk of each other at the 'fit o' the Walk'. It scares me that these individuals can 'spend' so much money so rapidly on the FOBT's while obviously not fully in control of their faculties/senses. Have never been present in any of the shops to see if the staff follow the procedures as reported by representatives of individual bookmakers or organisations who represent the bookmaking industry. Not many 'young black men' in this part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland who partake of both an early morning binge and sit for long spells in the bookies. I suspect our elderly male Chinese population would still be asleep after their 03.00 attendance at our many fine casinos.

Following a year long review the Labour Party will announce a number of measures they would introduce. Some centre around limiting advertising during sporting events but the standout one for me is the proposed ban in using credit cards to place bets online. Radio 5 quoted some weasel exec from Skybet who thought the latter was a terrible idea. What sort of ****wit thinks it's ok to make his living on the back of others gambling with money they don't have. Prick!

Heard two 'phone-ins' today on the wireless on the 'Labour' proposals. As usual, apart from reps. of the betting industry, everyone who called thought this was a very good idea. I was rather surprised that there were no 'nanny state' callers suggesting this was an infringement on their human rights to be a-holes.

Ridiculous analogy Gaz. Apart from some extremely questionable practices in the noughties where folk could self certify their income you have to prove you are good for the mortgage.
