“With half the race gone, there is half the race still to go.” Tank Commander during WW2 Worked in advertising - came up with the Opal Fruits slogan- "made to make your mouth water" one of the greatest sports commentators of all time Rest in Peace you absolute legend ...
RIP Murray. An absolute legend of a commentator and far cleverer than his many murryisms would ever have suggested. He did so much to make motorsport mainstream in this country, by making a sport that 90% of the viewers didn't properly understand entertaining anyway.
R.I.P . He was The voice of F1 , so much enthusiasm. If anyone likes Autobiographies , give his a go . Hell of a life .
I think that is why he was so successful in a sport that a lot of people think is just "driving around in circles". He was just as likely to get excited over tyre choice, pit windows or the chance of backmarker to beat a team mate as he was to get excited over an overtake at the front. It kept people engaged who otherwise wouldn't have been. I actually think the new commentators are probably better commentators at describing what is going on, but they aren't a patch on Murray for getting the public to care what is going on.
Agree about modern commentators , but in his day he had a ****ty little black and white monitor ( in the early days ) and the tv coverage was down to the local director , hence tons of coverage in Italy of Ferrari for instance . Now sky does the filming it’s the same for everyone and they have more info than they need . Brundle said the other day , he was sure if he walked out of the commentary booth , Murray wouldn’t have noticed as he was so wrapped up in the race .
