Ted Dexter has passed away. Made his England debut in 1958. Saw him play a couple of times in the mid ;60s. Very exciting batsman to watch.
Former England and Sussex captain Ted Dexter has died aged 86. Nicknamed 'Lord Ted', Dexter was an aggressive batsman and useful seam bowler who played 62 Tests for England and was captain between 1961-1964. He led Sussex to victory in the first two editions of the limited-overs Gillette Cup and went on to make a surprise two-Test comeback in 1968. In a statement, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) described Dexter as "one of England's greatest ever cricketers". "He was captain in 30 of his 62 Test matches and played the game with the same sense of adventure and fun that captures much of the story of his remarkable life." The statement added that Dexter passed away peacefully in the Compton Hospice in Wolverhampton at midday on Wednesday, 25 August, surrounded by his family. Lord Ted, a genuine legend. RIP Ted

Former England striker and Tottenham's record goalscorer Jimmy Greaves has died at the age of 81. Greaves began his career with Chelsea before spells at AC Milan, Spurs and West Ham. He scored 44 goals in 57 games for England and was a member of the 1966 World Cup-winning squad. He holds the record for most goals in the English top flight with 357, and scored 266 in 379 matches for Tottenham. Greaves' 41 goals in 1960-61 remains a record in a season for Chelsea, and he also holds the Spurs record with 37 in 1962-63. A Tottenham statement read: "We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of the great Jimmy Greaves, not just Tottenham Hotspur's record goalscorer but the finest marksman this country has ever seen. John Challis, best known for playing Boycie in BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses, has died aged 79. His family said he died "peacefully in his sleep, after a long battle with cancer". Co-star Sir David Jason paid tribute to Challis as a "a wonderful actor" and "a gentleman in the true sense of the word". His character - unscrupulous second-hand car dealer Terrance Aubrey Boyce - was a firm favourite with comedy fans. RIP Boycie
Former Liverpool and England striker Roger Hunt has died at the age of 83, the Premier League club has announced. Hunt was part of England's 1966 World Cup-winning side and is Liverpool's record league scorer with 244 goals. The forward won 34 England caps, scoring 18 international goals after making his debut in 1962 when Liverpool were in English football's second tier. Hunt played in every game of the 1966 World Cup and scored three times to help England out of their group. Another of our 66 winners. Underrated as a member of the team. Former Coventry City manager John Sillett, who guided the club to FA Cup victory in 1987, has died aged 85. Sillett managed the Sky Blues between 1986-90 and was at the helm when the club beat Tottenham 3-2 in the final at Wembley for their first major trophy. As a full-back, he began his career as a player at Chelsea and made more than 100 appearances for the club after making his debut in 1957. He played for Coventry and Plymouth Argyle before moving into management. RIP Big Man
Former Liverpool and Arsenal midfielder Ray Kennedy has died at the age of 70. Kennedy, who scored three times in 17 appearances for England, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1984. He scored 71 goals in 212 games for Arsenal, winning the First Division and FA Cup Double in 1971, before joining Liverpool in 1974. During an eight-year spell at Anfield, where he scored 72 goals in 393 appearances, Kennedy won five league titles and three European Cups. In a club statement, Liverpool said Kennedy - who won a total haul of 11 major trophies with the Reds - was "legendary". Really surprised and sad about this loss. A terrific player of my generation. Michael Nesmith, singer, guitarist and songwriter with 1960s pop group The Monkees, has died at the age of 78. The quartet enjoyed hits like Daydream Believer and I'm A Believer, and starred in their own popular TV sitcom. Nesmith wrote numerous tunes including Listen To The Band, Sunny Girlfriend and Tapioca Tundra. In a statement, his family said he "passed away this morning in his home, surrounded by family, peacefully and of natural causes". RIP Michael
Former England and Yorkshire captain Ray Illingworth has died, aged 89. The all-rounder, who led England to an away Test series victory over Australia in 1970-71, had been undergoing radiotherapy for esophageal cancer. Illingworth played 61 Tests for England between 1958-1973, scoring 1,836 Test runs at an average of 23.24 and claimed 122 wickets at 31.20; he was captain 31 times, winning 12 of those matches. Sidney Poitier, the first black man to win a best actor Oscar, has died at 94. The Hollywood star's death was confirmed to the BBC by the office of Fred Mitchell, the Bahamas' minister of foreign affairs. Poitier was a trailblazing actor and a respected humanitarian and diplomat. He won the Academy Award for best actor for Lilies of the Field in 1963. RIP Sidney
Great, great actor who excelled at a vast range of roles. The oscar was well deserved but my personal favourite was In the Heat of the Night opposite Rod Steiger. RIP Sidney.
Actor Gary Waldhorn, known for playing Councillor David Horton in TV sitcom The Vicar of Dibley, has died at 78. Waldhorn was one of the mainstays of the hit comedy, playing the chairman of the parish council who often locked horns with Dawn French's vicar. His other TV shows included 1980s and 90s favourites such as Brush Strokes, Lovejoy and Gallowglass. Waldhorn also enjoyed an illustrious career in the theatre, including with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He died on Monday, his son Josh said. Loved the Vicar of Dibley. RIP Gary
