Proper racing starts next Tuesday with the opening day of the Craven Meeting. Haggas has the Queen's filly Perfect Alibi entered for the mile maiden. This unraced filly is entered for the Oaks. She's by the now-deceased Le Havre out of Daphne (Duke of Marmalade) who won 3 races over a 3 year career. A first foal, the mare's dam is Daring Aim, who was a Daylami sister to Fleet of Fancy and Reach to the Moon's dam Golden Stream. I gauge she's unlikely to run at Newmarket as stable jockey, Marquand, is already assigned to a stablemate.

Tomorrow Intelligentsia returns to the track after a dreadful 2nd race at Salisbury. Her debut win made her look very smart but she then finished last when favourite for a Gp 3 race. She runs with a tongue tie tomorrow.
Distant Light (A Fastnet Rock sister to Gp3 winner Light Refrain) showed much improved form last week and if she can settle she can win.

On the gallops Stoute has all his 3yos on the go, with Naval College particularly positive. Haggas also has Educator in fast work and he is entered in a10f Newmarket Handicap next week: a novel if not impossible preparation for the Derby.

The coming week will give an indication of whether the Queen is likely to have an expensive or expansive season. From Tuesday to Sunday she currently has 9 entries, many of them lightly raced 3yos. Top of the list is probably Saga (Dettori). Instead of running in the Craven or the Greenham he makes his seasonal debut at Newcastle on Good Friday (having said that the winner gets 33% more for thisrace than either of the premier Classic trials). Dettori has the ride and if he shows enough he must have a chance of going to Longchamp or Newmarket.

Second to him, and a colt of which much was expected last year, Educator (Marquand) is entered in a 10f handicap at Newmarket. This doesn’t square up with his recent entry for June’s Epsom Derby as you would expect him to start in a Derby Trial. However a few years back Jack Hobbs nearly won a Derby after starting his 3yo career in a handicap: it can be a route (I'm sure people know others). Obviously to go any further Educator would have to win Tuesday and then go on to be competitive in a Derby Trial somewhere. Educator is still a horse rated by connections. He just has to confirm that reputation on the racecourse: he has something to prove.

Next comes Haggas’s 2nd Derby entry General Idea, who is entered at both Newbury and Nottingham in maidens. I’m sure he’ll run in one of them. The surprise Oaks entry Perfect Alibi, is entered in a Newbury maiden and may run, except that the Queen’s Discretion (Charlton) seems to already have Moore booked to ride her in the same race. Discretion is a full-brother to the useful (now sold) Wink of an Eye, and showed some ability. With luck she’ll improve as much as her older brother.

Moore also has the mount on Stoute’s Kiteflyer (Iffraaj). This colt is the third foal of the Royal broodmare Star Value, who as a broodmare has been a bit of a dud so far. It’s interesting that he’s making his debut in the Wood Ditton Stakes, which is for unraced horses. In its time some good horses have won this race, including Classic winners, and trainers likely to put up horses showing a lot of promise. Stoute’s other unraced 3yo, Naval Charge (Dartmouth), is entered at Nottingham on Saturday. He’s been getting good reports on the gallops and is out of a Selkirk sister to Sinndar.

Nottingham could also see the debut of the first Royal 2yo in Crosstitch (Recorder). He’s the first foal of an unraced Al Kazeem mare, who comes from the family of Green Dancer (winner of Futurity, French 2000G and Prix Lupin). She’s been sighted on the gallops recently, and Bell likes to have an early 2yo. They must have liked this first foal as his dam's subsequent coverings were Cracksman and Australia (though the original plan was Galileo).Hopefully by the time Crosstitch runs Bell will have had a Royal winner in the shape of Loudspeaker (also Recorder) at Beverley (Shepherd already booked).

It will be hugely disappointing if by Sunday night there hasn’t been a winner and a few positive runs from this lot.

Well the first one wins.......by a nose.
Educator is an extremely attractive colt, but he also looks a stuffy colt. He took some roisting to get his run going and looked beaten a furlong out. Marquand switched him right inside the last half furlong, whereupon he made up ground rapidly getting his nose in front on the line.
I suppose he could go for a Derby trial, let's face it Enable was only third on her seasonal debut, but it still looks a bit hopeful. Apparently he's pencilled in for the 10f handicap on Derby day as an alternative.
A win is a win though and hopefully there'll be more this week.

Kiteflyer's run was very promising. A big colt he was slowly away and took time to understand what was required. He was slightly baulked by the winner a furlong out but ran on pleasingly. He should have a future. As I said earlier, Star Value has been disappointing as a broodmare: hopefully Kiteflyer will change that. There is a 2yo full-sister (as yet to be allocated to a trainer) called Value Added and a yearling filly by Almanzor. If she has a foal it will be by Zarak.

Loudspeaker ran OK, but needs further.

As of Wednesday the Queen has had 2 winners since the start of the turf season. We know about Educator but the second was Balding’s Distant Light at Lingfield, who won a 7f Novice event. This was a big improvement by this Fastnet Rock sister to last year’s Group 3 winner Light Refrain (Frankel). Her 2nd run as a 2yo had been disappointing but her two runs this year show she has something about her, even if she’ll never be as good as her older sister. Interestingly she seems to stay a bit further.
These fillies hail from a fairly new family to the Royal Stud. However they’ve established themselves well. Light Refrain is now a maiden broodmare, while her dam, Light Music, has produced two winners from two foals and has a 2yo filly full-sister to Light Refrain called Gentle Light (currently not allocated to a trainer, hopefully she’ll make it into training soon). Light Music has no yearling, having been rested, but hopefully will produce a foal to Le Havre this year. Light Music’s dam, Medley, has had a lean time since producing Light Music and has a 2yo colt called Marching Band (Ribchester) who’s yet to be allocated. It’s to be hoped she’ll produce a foal to Land Force this year.

What can we pick out of last week’s non-winners? Kiteflyer, already mentioned, is probably the pick. Saga was a bit disappointing at Kempton when 2nd to a useful Haggas horse, but he did finish 12 lengths ahead of the 3rd. He seemed to run with the choke out and it may be that he’ll improve on that. Perhaps the Brittania at Royal Ascot is a realistic target. Naval Charge made a promising debut at Nottingham, but I didn’t like the ride given by Kingscote. He yanked his mount’s head back at the start and after 2f the gelding was about 15 lengths behind the leader. Why not start as well as you can and then settle? Putting the brakes on is no way to start a race. Naval Charge made up a large amount of ground once in the straight but only stayed on in the last furlong to finish 4th. If the experience hasn’t soured him, he looks a certain winner next time out.
Discretion didn’t run badly at Newbury, and will come on for the run. But Oaks entry Perfect Alibi was very disappointing in the same race and it makes you wonder what Haggas/Racing Manager were thinking of with that entry. General Idea didn’t run so that was another entry that didn’t make sense.
Loudspeaker will win a small race over a bit further but first up 2yo, Crosstitch, was a bit underwhelming. Perhaps he needs further and hopefully the other 2yos are a lot better.

Balding sends Duty Bound out today. They’ve sold the mare.

Garner declared at Lingfield (1.45) on Tuesday. Will be the Charlton's first 2YO runner of '22 - and the first ever 2YO runner with Harry's name on the licence. No messing around re jockey bookings - Ryan Moore will ride. Fascinating to see how he gets on.

One positive stat for Garner is that the yards first 2YO runner last year won (Silver Bullet Lady at 7/1). She hasn't run since but could be back at Woverhampton on Friday. SBL actually won, last term, the Fillies Conditions Stakes being run at Salisbury this afternoon.

Re Tactical, incidentally, I see that Andrew Balding has mentioned next month's 'Buckingham Palace Handicap' before a possible return to Pattern races.

I hope Garner runs well and indeed wins. His dams' second (by Street Cry) and third (by Shamardal) foals both won. After that she was extremely disappointing and she was culled from the stud last year. Maybe Garner will embarrass Warren, let's hope so. They certainly took all the plaudits from today's win by Cachet.

Tactical was disappointing yesterday. He dawdled out of the stalls then started a run but was blocked off twice. If he starts properly he can still be a good 6-7f horse. Not Moore's finest hour.

A couple of other interesting runners this week. Charlton's Discretion surely should win at Beverley. On Wednesday Spring is Sprung could bounce back (one for you OddDog) now that he's 2 stones lighter. On the same card at Chester, Improvise is entered for the Cheshire Oaks. A winner as a 2yo she is by Iffraaj and a full-sister to a useful colt called Eightsome Reel, who won 3 races and ran an excellent race at Royal Ascot.

More runners later in the week.

Discretion gets off the mark at Beverley. It must be hoped she can improve as much as her full-brother Wink of an Eye.

As feared Reach for the Moon was scratched today from both the Dante and the Derby. His aim becomes the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.

A victory for Garner today would be some small consolation.

Unsurprisingly Educator and General Idea are also scratched from the Derby: for the best I'd think. Almost as surprising was that Perfect Alibi is still in the Oaks. This once-raced filly runs in the maiden at Ascot tomorrow.

Improvise was tailed off in the Cheshire Oaks and again one has to ask why she was recently entered for the Ribblesdale if she's this bad. Garner dwelt on his debut and then ran very green. He did get the idea in the last furlong and may have some ability.

Kings Lynn makes his seasonal debut at Chester. He has shown ability on soft ground and has the favoured 1 draw. He must go close. Saga turns out at Ascot and hopefully will settle better this time.

Facile victory for Kiteflyer at Chepstow. 4-1 ON, where else would you be certain to get 25% on your investment?

Looks a typical Stoute improver. His next entries will be informative.

A couple of runners today at Salisbury and one would hope a winner amongst them. Let's see if Naval College can follow up on his promising debut. The admirable Dobbs gets the pilot's seat. Not sure when Loudspeaker will win if he doesn't win today.

Well Done SBC! A first 2yo winner for HM. Drifted in the betting but made all and always looked in control. Perhaps the fact that they'd sold the mare should have made me realise it would probably win.

Duty Bound disappointed me when he made his seasonal debut last month. Upped a further 2f he put things right today. Out of a half-sister to Kalanisi who has now been sold, there is a 2yo filly called Cape Point (by Muhaarar), out of the mare, who's yet to go into training. If she's no good the family will be lost to the Royal Stud.

The big race for the team tonight is Reach for the Moon's seasonal debut in the Heron Stakes. Though a humble listed race some cracking horses have won it (it's in an optimum place in the Racing Calendar for Royal Ascot) and I hope the Queen's colt joins them.

When Estimate won the the Ascot Gold Cup she was the Queen's first Group 1 winning filly since Height of Fashion. She raced again as a 5yo mare and then went to stud with the hope that she would become a star in the Royal Stud ranks. It hasn't turned out that way.
For her first 3 seasons she was sent to Dubawi (why do they do that? : send a mare to the same stallion continually when so much could be found out by sending her to 3 different stallions). Her first foal, Calculation, wasn't a complete write-off but was a bit slow. He did manage to win 3 races as a 3yo gelding, then struggled as a 4yo before being sold relatively cheaply. The second foal was a filly, Approximate, who entered training with Stoute but was soon transferrred to Bell, where she managed to beat 12 horses out of the 57 she ran against with her best placing being 6th in a Yarmouth maiden as a 3yo. Ordinarily you wouldn't keep a filly like this to breed but being the only filly (so far) she went to stud. Hopefully she will foal to the now deceased Le Havre this year.
The third Dubawi foal was Evaluation and he is now a 4yo and believe it or not has equalled Calculation's number of wins and is the winning-most Royal Stud runner (so far) this year. After winning one small race as a 3yo gelding he was sold for 30,000gns and trained by Dalgleish to win both of his starts this year. His first was off a rating of 68, his second of a rating of 73 and this evening at York he runs off a BHA rating of 79. Not quite a high-point for Estimates' offspring as Calculation did get to 91.
Her next foal was Transpire (by Frankel) who went into training as a 2yo but was soon taken out and something must have gone wrong with this colt. The 2yo this year is Market Value (by Siyouni) and it is to be hoped this filly shows some dash. There's a yearling colt by Sea the Stars and a colt-foal by Lope de Vega. She's to be mated this year with St Mark's Basilica.
All wonderful sires, but all solid 10f horses and likely to produce more of the same (hope I'm wrong). BUT why not send her to a fast horse like Pinatubo or Earthlight, or even someone more out of it like Mehmas or dear old Kodiac?

So Evaluation made it 3 for the season. Last year Michael Holding was interviewed and said Stoute and he were confident Evaluation would have a string of wins in 2021. Well he's having them now.

4 Royal horses going today, unfortunately two of them in the same maiden at Yarmouth. Of the two General Idea, from the in form Haggas yard, should be the one but Stoute's Naval Charge is no backmarker. Couldn't they have found two races?
General Idea has a lot to prove as he was surprisingly entered for the Derby in March, but was nowhere near ready on his racecourse debut in April. Beautifully bred, being by Galileo out of a Group 1 winning Australian mare, the 12f should suit today.
The other interesting 3yo colt running today is Kiteflyer at Ripon. I wondered if Stoute would give this promising Iffraaj colt another Novice run before tackling Listed company, and a Class 5 race at Ripon would normally be the right race to give him more experience. Unfortunately he's joined by Godolphin's Shining Blue, who came out a week ago at Leicester to beat the Queen's Dukedom easily on his racecourse debut. Shining Blue is odds on but Kiteflyer is surely a stone better horse than Dukedom? An interesting contest.
Charlton runs his 3yo filly Discretion at Carlisle. She won her maiden at Beverley, leading all the way. She's been dropped in trip for today's event, which may be slightly surprising as her full-brother, Wink of an Eye, won over 10-11.5f (he improved 20+lbs last year). However she seems to have more speed than her brother and it is to be hoped she rounds off a fruitful day for the Queen.

Horrible day, with the 'promising' horses running shocking races. Day saved by Discretion winning at Carlisle. She'd have won a good bit easier if her pilot could switch hands. Macdonald took nearly half a furlong to change from his right hand to his left hand, in which time the horse veered left across the course.
Kiteflyer was hugely disappointing. General Idea even worse.
