Rory. This time aged 22 as part of Taste at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. The first thing that struck me was the quality and condition of the film footage. Must have been done in 35mm. In moments it feels like it was filmed just a couple of years ago. and another from the same festival:
Did Rory's Stratocaster always have that poor finish to it, do you reckon? In videos over the years the trusted instrument never gets worse. But never gets better either. I read somewhere the other day that it gets lonely with nobody good enough to play it. Actually brought a lump to my throat, and I try to check myself getting sentimental over inanimate objects.
Nice interview here with Rory’s nephew Daniel Gallagher, talking about that guitar and the white Telecaster Rory played slide on: https://www.guitarplayer.com/player...amous-stratocaster-and-other-guitars-up-close
Thanks for that Interview video Chilco. That guitar took some wear. I suspect the few nights out under the bush really took a toll on the finish durability. Just been looking for Rory concerts on YT and there are loads. I supposed I shouldn't be surprised, as the guy pretty toured forever. Here's one from French TV where people are getting up on stage and dancing, and Rory and the band don't bat an eyelid. Imagine that happening today NOT. During the last 5 mins of the gig, he gets up on a speaker, and doesn't stop playing while he's climbing! Bear in mind, it's a three piece band, so he has to keep going or there's just bass and drums. Also does his trademark machine gun thing. That's the last memory I have of him when I saw him at Southsea.
Here’s a nice bit of summery pop from Midsomer Norton’s Avalon Highway, with their debut single produced by Mike Batt:
If I've ever needed being put in the mood for a summer holiday this rather mediocre Beach Boys track from 1992 has always done the trick. Just something about it. Island Fever, the original US release.
I love the Beach Boys; always take them on holiday. I’ve never heard that before and I don’t think I’ll be rushing to hear it again. It was like The Beach Boys with low battery power!!
Belated birthday wishes to Kim Shattuck of The Muffs. This one from their first incarnation and this from their second
am at work, so that involves spending several hours a day watching videos on youtube because my job is...unchallenging to say the least . Just watched this little gem. The song itself is excellent imho but the video is very poignant, especially with the recentish update
I’m baking today, so I have plenty of time, also, to watch music videos on YouTube. This has always been one of my favourites and, yet, the Connells never had another hit, did they? Pity, because this is such a great song!
Pop your top Given the political bollocks , lets Its Mrs Jab home soon I'll Better not play her this tune before she's had a glass or to of crisp white. Ah toot!!
Nothing much after '96 it seems and no hits. Still going apparently, but described as mostly dormant. Bit like me
Yeah, I know what you mean. It comes from an album called Summer in Paradise. A friend of mine gave it to me in the early 1990's. I wouldn't have bought it normally, as it is a big step down from what the BBs easily achieved in music. It almost sounds like a Beach Boys imitation band. And that's the thing. If it was done by another band we'd go, 'Oh, that's quite nice'. Me getting that album coincided with a few incredibly fun holidays I had before and after my jaunt in New Zealand, so it's basically nostalgia. I've also played it in a hired convertible with the top down whilst driving across Crete during a holiday. It works quite well under that circumstance.
Think i've posted this before but here is a really nice and heartfelt tribute to the harmony and melody genius "Mr Brian Wilson" himself...
