Have you seen the series “Babylon Berlin”, Kaito? Ferry was the musical director on it (its set in the Weimar Republic in the 20s) and I’m really enjoying it (yes - this should probably be in the Art & Literature thread) but, when he sings, it’s clear that his voice isn’t what it was
Hi Dave, yes I have watched all 4 series of Babylon Berlin and love it. Liv Lisa Fries is brilliant as Charlotte and Volker Bruch is superb as Gereon. Together they are quite magical and make the series what it is. The Weimar Republic is one of my favourite periods in German history and it really was a crazy time when everything seemed to be possible, yet it preceded the darkest period in Germany. Bryan Ferry is far more accomplished than the music he created with Roxy Music and his solo career, even though that was quite something.
Ooh - are there 4 series? How exciting - I’m only just halfway through series 2. Great to know I’ve got plenty to go on!
How about this blast from the past? IMO it was Level 42s best. Three guys from the IoW plus Lindup at the forefront of the jazz funk scene in the UK in the early 80s. I went to see them live at the Royal Court in Liverpool during my time llving in the city and loved it. MIike Lindup's falsetto complements the gruffness of Mark KIng's vocal. Shame about Boon being no longer with us.
A bit belated but couldn't let this pass without a mention. R.I.P. to Composer, Lyricist, Producer and Playwright Jim Steinman.... His work on the classic original Meat Loaf Bat out of Hell album is superb....
Hard to believe that it’s been 43 years since Sandy Denny died. Incredible talent taken too soon. Here’s one of her finest songs with Richard Thompson’s fine guitar work. Wonderful song.
The undisputed master of the rock ballad. What cracking songs he wrote ..... RIP - another legend gone
Keep an ear on Chris Hawkins' early breakfast show on 6 Music on Tuesday for the new one from you-know-who.
Dave I was wondering if you had read any of the novels on which this series is based? I have been debating about trying them having finished the Bernie Gunther series of novels by Philip Kerr. Kerr's books have become pretty cultish ( there is a website dedicated to the character) and the reviews I have read on Amazon are suggestive that Volker Kutscher's books are not as good. HBO are supposed to have bought the rights to the Bernie Gunther books but it will be a challenge to bring the series to life on screen because they often jump about 15 years between events.
Kaito I go to the jazz festival in Vienne each year and always make a trip to the Fourviere to go to the museum in Lyon although I have never been to a gig in the theatre. There range of artists who perform is incredible and ranges from pop, rock, jazz to classical music. I wondered if you had been in to the museum next door? In my opinion, this museum is on a par with the British Museum for it's Roman finds although I particularly like reading the funeral stele to find out about the people who lived in Lugdunum. The Claudian table was the find that always impressed me too but it is a shame for British tourists that the museum only alludes to the Battle of Lugdunum in 197AD as this was actually the first time that an army from the British Isles marched in to Europe - 1600 years before Wellington. Unfortunately, the protagonist Claudius Albinus lost to Septimius Serverus despite the assistance of the Lyon cohort and this ultimatel results in Lyon's fall from grace. a lot of the damage stems for the turulence which followed this civil war.
No, I haven’t. Like you, I was considering giving them a go after watching the series. I’m also going to try one of the Philip Kerr books after your recommendations!
I’ve been resting. Your team has dropped off the edge of a cliff. Commiserations. When you’re down, there’s always punk rock.
