Scotland v England at Hampden Park 18th May 1974 Photo taken by the Glasgow Herald & Evening Times once we got off the train. Carole, Margaret, Marie from Nottingham who we met on the train, Heid and Sue as well as the promotion girls At and in the pub near the ground. Some were trying to guess our ages, 16, 15 then 14. We were old enough to drink at that point but took it as a compliment In the ground before the game
Yes we started following Scotland due to all the Leeds players in the team. It was no contest. Billy Bremner was my hero and always will be.
Good Girl! Opposite way for me - supported Leeds because so many Scotland players were Leeds. Btw, you prolly stepped over me at that game. I would no doubt have been in one of the gutters on the way over to the ground.
Heidi, do you think the Leeds team in the early to mid 70's could have achieved more if they didn't smoke and drink? Was it the case that most footballers smoked and drank back then?
I think in hindsight, a larger squad would have got us over the line more. Wasn’t there a period where we played an FA cup final, replay, euro fixture and a league decider game, all in 9 days or something. We bombed out the lot.
I can recall reading one of 'Snakes' books saying the Football League, even back then did us no favours...
Our players were very fit despite those things plus it was relevant to all football teams of the era. We were robbed of so much by bribed refs in 1973 and 1975 plus had to play the vital game at Wolves 48 hours after the FA Cup final. As said above, we never got any help from the powers that be. Vital goals wiped off in so many games too. Offside with Ray Tinkler against WBA. That's only a few things!!
