Yes, a monetary union almost inevitably requires a fiscal one too. It's highly unlikely to work, otherwise. Of course, in Europe, that was what the Federalists always intended. Nobody bothered to ask the European public for their opinion though!

I did laugh when I read a yes supporter saying can't trust a biased article.

"I'm merely stating a simple fact, today's prices are irrelevant"

    VERY relevant.
If only for the fact that the sums can be done now for oil prices, FOREX etc that have
    REALLY OCCURRED in recent times.
And see how that adds up.

It’s a great example of falling between two stools, really. The United States of Europe would have been a good idea, not least because it would help solve the problem of the American inmate running the asylum. Maintaining the status quo would not have been so bad. Monetary union combines the disadvantages of both, and adds a disastrous consequence nobody important foresaw.

    ...<grr>

It’s our political divide in a nutshell. Reasonable people, who tend to be doing okay, would rather have water they can drink, and land that won’t collapse under their houses.

Poorly educated people, who tend to have diddlysquat, see clean water and stable earth as luxuries (and/or myths perpetrated by pointy headed intellectuals) compared to a badly needed source of income, even one that amounts to inviting someone in for a cheap trick.

Makes complete sense for the USA.
Resource deposits well away from population centres and the San Andreas fault etc,
    so why not.

I tend to believe real facts & figures, not some politically motivated guesstimate. These guys deal in just that - facts and figures. They have no axe to grind either way, unlike the SNP.

"I'm not even going to pretend I read that."

    Cannot say I blame you.
Those damn USA govt officials and their "Westminster/City" decades-long tracking
of the Brent crude oil prices. <grr>
