Aston Villa are close to completing the signing of Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given.

The Republic of Ireland international is a key target for Villa boss Alex McLeish after the club lost first-choice keeper Brad Friedel moved to Tottenham.

The 35-year-old has been in discussions with the Villans for two weeks. He has now passed a medical at Villa Park and the transfer is expected to be announced within 24 hours.

The former Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers man has been eager to move on from Eastlands after falling behind England international Joe Hart in the pecking order and failing to gain regular first-team action under Roberto Mancini.

According to SSN the deal was completed at round 9.00pm today for a fee of £3,500,000. For this fee you have got a very good keeper. I do feel sorry for Shay, but the way Joe played last season there was no way that RM was going to demote Joe to 2nd choice behind shay.
