Preston North End v Sheffield Wednesday @ Deepdale 5/8/2017

After what seems like a lifetime Championship football returns with a tough start for North End not just on Saturday but the entire monh of August seems to have us playing some exceeding tough opposition, first up the Owls.
Having missed out in the play offs last season losing to local ish rivals Huddersfield Town on penalties, Wednesday will hoping it will be third time lucky under manager Carlos Carvalhal.
Wednesday ended their pre season by losing to Rangers 2-0 at Hillsborough although little can be gleaned from pre season results probably would have thought Wednesday would have had a far superior squad compared to the former Scottish giants.
Carlos was only slightly impressed with his sides performance stating that it was an un Wednesday performance in the first half but better in the second. They were with Hutchinson, Lee and Palmer who were not fully fit for the friendly.
Three ex North Enders in Wednesday's strong squad in Jones, Wallace and Reach, however if Wednesday play well they will need Bannan to be at his best in my view, a quality player at this level. They have forwards to choose from which does create it's own problems getting the best partnership on the pitch, will be interesting to see if Forestieri plays as he is on a hat trick of a sorts against North End three red cards in a row against us. Sure Pearson will get to grips early on to make him aware of his presence.
Certainly pressure is on Carlos to deliver this season whether he will or not we will find out over the next nine months or so.
The home side ended their pre season with a comprehensive stuffing of League 1 Fleetwood Town, although there are still some issues to be sorted out especially defending dead balls, personal view still need a gripper in the centre back position, there still seems to be some transfer speculation in respects of Hugill, however there is no guarentee that he will play given the performance of Maguire in the two games he has played in.
Interesting season ahead for the Whites and probably the football we play will be more entertaining thgan the games under Grayson where we were more of a counter attacking side.

a win against The Owls would be a steling performance copared with last year's 0-1 against Swindon. in fact it would be better than the first 6 games las season.

Carlos Carvalhal issued a passionate rallying call to everyone at Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the new season as the Owls head coach looks to banish any clouds that have hung around this summer. A disappointing lack of signings, a delay with the new kits and a general feeling of negativity has taken some of the buzz away from the start of a fresh tilt at promotion to the Premier League. On Thursday, Carvalhal met with the press ahead of the weekend trip to Preston, their opening match of the Championship season and it was clear that the Portuguese had something he wished to get off his chest. Without being prompted, the coach launched into a three-minute long speech whereby he called on fans to forget anything that has gone on in the summer and to concentrate on backing the team, making a promise that he, his staff and the players will 'fight very hard' to finally achieve the aim of promotion, He said: "I can start. It is time to focus on the Championship. It is not a time to talk too much about kits, stripes and the players that we don't have and the players that we wish. "It is time to talk about the players that we have and the things that are important. The most important thing to me and us is the badge. It is not important if we have more or less blue in the shirt or if Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo will come. "It is important we give confidence to the players that we have and that is the most important thing. We have to defend our badge at all the moment. I can promise the Wednesday fans when the season starts that we will fight from the first to the last second of all the games to work very hard to try and win all the games. "We can't promise direct promotion or play-offs. Nobody can promise these kind of things. We will fight very hard in all the games. We have to focus on the fundamentals and create a positive environment around the team and people, start to forget about the negative things and just talk about the positives. "If all of us do a little more compared to previous seasons, we can achieve a better position. It is my message to all the fans. We are looking forward to starting the competition."

The wait is over, three months without competitive football comes to an end this Saturday when the Lilywhite entertain Sheffield Wednesday in the Deepdale opener of the 2017/18 EFL Sky Bet Championship.

It will be manager Alex Neil’s first league game in charge of North End and face in the Owls, a side who have been in the division’s Play-Offs for the last two seasons; losing last year to an eventually promoted Huddersfield Town side on penalties in the semi-finals.

Carlos Carvalhal has recruited the experience of George Boyd into his squad over the summer months; the former Burnley left-sided midfielder is expected to make his debut for the South Yorkshiremen in front of a sold out away crowd.

    3 August 2017

    The Opposition
The Owls may not have made too many signings over the summer, but Carlos Carvalhal already had one of the most experienced squads at his disposal. With internationals all over the pitch and with players who have moved for many millions of pounds during their careers he has the unenviable task of selecting just 11 players to start the league opener against PNE.

Ross Wallace, Adam Reach and David Jones will return to familiar surroundings and will all be expected to be involved against the previous club. The quality of Barry Bannan is likely to be the fulcrum which the side is based around in the midfield, whilst in attack the Owls’ boss has the luxury of choosing from the likes of Fletcher, Hooper, Forestieri, Rhodes, Joao, Nuhui and more.

The addition of Boyd will provide balance down the left hand side, whilst Wallace, a natural left footer could start on the right, with his trickery and ability to deliver the ball into dangerous areas being a threat.

    PNE Team News
For North End, summer additions Declan Rudd, Josh Harrop, Sean Maguire, Kevin O’Connor and Darnell Fisher are all available, the former having returned to training last weekend after picking up a thigh injury in the first minute of pre-season action at Bamber Bridge back at the beginning of July.

In fact, only club captain Tom Clarke (Achilles injury) will be ruled out of the manager’s plans, with Paul Gallagher, Jordan Hugill and Calum Woods, who all missed the last week of pre-season fixtures, in full training ahead of the visit of the Owls to PR1.

For the opening game of the season, experienced referee Tony Harrington will be the man with the whistle. Last season he took charge of two North End games, the 1-1 draw away at Nottingham Forest and the thrilling 4-2 win over Brentford at Deepdale.

Tony, who is now in his seventh year on the EFL list has also been to PR1 on a number of previous occasions, including the 2014/15 penalty win against Oldham in the JPT and North End’s last two home league games against Notts County, including the 2-0 win over the Magpies at Deepdale in February 2014.

He will be joined by assistants Billy Smallwood and Geoff Russell, whilst Scott Oldham will be the fourth official.

    • This is our 119th season in the EFL since the first season in 1888/89 – why 119th and not 129th? The war years when there was no official Football Leagues run!
    • It is our 45th in the second tier (38% of our league career). We have spent 46 seasons in the top tier (39%), 23 at the third level (19%) and five at the bottom of the league (4%).
    • This is the 64th time we have started the season with a home game and we have recorded 21 wins, 20 draws and 22 defeats. We have scored 104 goals in those opening home games and conceded 87
    • Our biggest opening day win was in 1889/90, when we overcame Stoke (no City in their title at that time) by 10-0. This remains our record league win. We have started the season by scoring five goals on three separate occasions, including the very first league season when we overcame Burnley by 5-2. Our biggest defeat in an opening day home fixture was 1-4 to Tottenham in 1956. We have also lost three times by 2-4, most recently to Colchester in 2011.
    • This is only the second time we have played a league game on 5th August – the second earliest we have ever started an EFL season – the other also, bizarrely, being against Sheffield Wednesday in 2006, when Sean St. Ledger, Liam Chilvers and Danny Pugh made their debuts.
    • The only other competitive game on this date was the 1-0 home victory over Blackpool in the League Cup in 2013, when Tom Clarke scored an 87th minute winner.

Preston North End 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0

PNE line-up: Maxwell, Fisher, Cunningham ©, Pearson, Huntington, Spurr, Barkhuizen, Browne (Hugill, 67), Maguire (Gallagher, 74), Johnson, Robinson. Subs not used: Rudd, Vermijl, Horgan, Davies, May.

Sheffield Wednesday line-up: Westwood, Hunt, Rhodes (Hooper, 57), Bannan, Loovens ©, Lees, Reach, Boyd (Wallace, 67), Hutchinson (Jones, 69), Pudil, Forestieri. Subs not used: Wildsmith, Fox, Fletcher, Nuhiu.

Attendance: 18,267 (5,489 Sheffield Wednesday fans)

The opening game of the season is always eagerly awaited, hope springs eternal etc, however this morning the overwhelming feeling of doom about this, worried about the defence and whether I woul get to the ground in time due to it being national tractors clogging up all roads in your area day.
Tremendous atmosphere at the kick off, sawa frenetic start no real goal scoring opportunities, what was apparent was that Wednesday were slightly hestitant at the back in the early stages.
The only thing that was certain was that both Pearson and Forestieri would see cards and both duly, Wednesday had one effort from Jordan Rhodes which went wide, it was a rare spotting of the He scores when he wants man, ended early with him being subbed in the second half.
North End efforts from Robinson and Maguire whose shot was well saved by Westwood at his near post. Our dead balls as per preseason were in the main ****e. Speaking of Westwood he seemed to waste an in ordinate amount of time in the first hallf possibly due to seeing which blue seat he could hit when he cleared the ball, he hit a few.
Second have we mostly dominated and should have scored but two Robinson efforts, another Maguire shot and a Spurr headed which hit the bar and nearly a own goal by a Wednesday defender were the closest we got until about 15 minutes from the end Hugill powered his way into the area and appeared to be brought down, the official gave the spot kick, have to say it looked a foul. John took it sent Westwood the wrong way.
Could have been two when again Hugill got through but apparently used his hands so it didn't stand.
Wednesday were unlucky when Maxwell waved goodbye to Wallace's free kick which went narrowly over and his ability tomrush 90m yards from goal when both he and Huntington left a ball for each other luckily Forestieri's header went the wrong side of the post of an unguarded goal.
They worked their socks of today, Maguire tremendous work rate, however the back four gave a tremendous performance, like I said deserved win.

    Preston manager Alex Neil:

"Our strength is that we have such a good team spirit, they work so hard for each other and we got what we deserved today.

"When you have that amount of pressure, you want what you deserve. We could and maybe should have scored more.

"That's three points on the board now. Notoriously in the last two seasons we've not started well so it's pleasing to get three points on the board."

    Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal:

"We deserved to lose the game. We were out of everything. We ran too much in the first half but with no brain.

"We didn't win too many second balls, Preston won all the second balls. We had one or two chances, Preston had more than us so congratulations to Preston.

"No excuses about us, we must do much better to win games in the Championship and we must analyse this game to do better in the future."
