By 2020/21 standards, it has been a long wait between games for Pompey following last week’s victory over Ipswich.

And the Fratton faithful will be hoping the Danny Cowley era continues its winning start at Shrewsbury on Saturday.

The Blues are currently sitting in eighth position and are just a point outside the League One play-off spots with 11 games remaining.

Their next opponents, meanwhile, are down in 17th and seem to be out of the woods in terms of avoiding the drop.

That is despite the Shrews being just one point off the foot of the table when Steve Cotterill replaced Sam Ricketts as manager back in November.

They have suffered only four league defeats since, despite the former Pompey boss having to spend two spells in hospital after contracting Covid-19.

Thankfully, he is now on the mend and no doubt eager to make a return to the dug-out when fully recovered.

Cotterill was still able to inspire his troops to a 2-1 victory at Burton earlier in the week, courtesy of goals from Curtis Main and Harry Chapman.

It finished goalless when the sides met at Fratton Park on the opening day of the season, although Aaron Pierre was sent off for the visitors in the closing stages.

    TEAM NEWS
Callum Johnson has returned to training following a calf problem, but John Marquis (ankle) is a major doubt.

Ronan Curtis is away on Republic of Ireland international duty, while Alex Bass (foot) and Ellis Harrison (knee) are both sidelined.

Curtis Main could feature for Shrewsbury against his former club, but they will be without suspended skipper Ollie Norburn after he accumulated 10 yellow cards.

Donald Love (groin) and Aaron Pierre (calf) are also missing, alongside goalkeeper Matija Sarkic, who is currently with the Montenegro national team.

    HEAD TO HEAD
    Overall
    Pompey: 14 wins
    Shrewsbury: 10 wins
    4 draws

    At Shrewsbury
    Pompey: 3 wins
    Shrewsbury: 8 wins
    2 draws

    OFFICIALS
    Referee: Benjamin Speedie
Assistants: Kenwyn Hughes and Lisa Rashid
    Fourth Official: Steven Plane

    BETTING
Pompey are the 6/5 favourites with VBET to secure all three points, while the hosts can be backed at 5/2.

    Playing some good stuff again.

Difference a bit of confidence and decent coaching makes.

Wow! Half-time whistle, and it's 0-2 to Pompey. We have completely controlled the first half, actually at last playing as a team.

Took the lead in the 25th minute with Marcus Harness scoring his 9th goal of the season. In the 36th minute, we went two nil up with a simple tap in from John Marquis, from a pass from lee Brown.

Both our full backs getting forward at will, with Callum Johnson making a good return following his injury.

Final whistle. 1-2 to Pompey. Three more points. Up to 5th in the table. Two wins out of two for Danny and Nicky Cowley.

Shrews pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute through Nathaniel Ogbeta. In the 68th minute, John Marquis was red carded for a foul. Could/Should have been a yellow card, but the home side's players surrounded the referee to press for a sending off. Funny that, as we hardly got any decisions today from a "homer" of a referee !

We brought on Andy Cannon for Michael Jacobs in the 75th minute, Charlie Daniels for Ben Close after 84 minutes, and finally Rasmus Nicolaisen for Ryan Williams in the 95th minute. We defended well, with around 8 minutes of additional time added on.

I think it was my contribution - putting us to lose in the prediction league that swung it.

    Do I win £5?

Hi Guys! I have just got back from an afternoon hike and, lo and behold, another win. Is that 10 away wins now? We have missed the autos, but appear to be heavily involved in the play-off shake- up! Six more wins should do it, as other contenders have to play each other.

Oñe query. It must have been a súper heavy tackle for Marquis to be red carded. Any chance of this being rescinded?

Initially, it didn't seem to be that bad a challenge. The Shrews player made the most of it, but was soon up on his feet uninjured, and able to continue. The mass deputation of Shrews players surrounding the referee helped him make up his mind very quickly. Make of it what you will !!

On to a different team, and it is Gillingham! According to the BBC report they bullied Hull into coughing up two points. It must be difficult to play against a team that intimidate. Are the Gills the 21st Century answer to Wimbledon of the 80s? Is this your view Woopert's?

From what I have seen of them, they are a typical Steve Evans managed team, inasmuch as they play to win by whatever means possible ! I have seen and heard Evans at Fratton Park, with his foul mouthed behaviour and language, not very nice at all. This must rub off on his players.

Compared to them, AFC Wimbledon players are 'little angels'.
