Good documentary. Seen some of the footage before. Here's bobby charlton sitting up in bed etc etc. His ****ing best mates have died and it's all get up and carry on. That scars you. I understand at that time and so soon after the war you celebrate the living but a kid of 20, just carry on. Kinell. Can you imagine sturridge or Raheem dealing with that??? Anyway bobby charlton. Englands greatest ever player and scorer of fantastic goals. Happy birthday. True story. I was in Los Angeles around 91 time. Just in a mall looking in a jeweler s and the owner, a Mexican, comes out giving it a sales pitch. Where you from? England. His next words: Bobby Charlton. He saw the 1970 World Cup in the flesh.
There's a picture of Charlton. If I'd sorted out an alternative picture host to Photobucket - I'd stick a picture up. Legendary combover gone wrong
They said that at one time wherever you went in South America and spoke English people immediately mentioned Moore, Banks and Charlton.
Always stuck in my mind seeing Bobby Charlton opening a fete at my old school back in the late 1970s. Seemed almost shy but happily spoke to people and signed autographs. Stood next to a bloke whose young lad had a Man Utd tee shirt on. "Was he good, dad?" he asked. His dad replied that he was. "Was he very good?" He was indeed very good his dad told him. "Was he as good as Joe Jordan?". His dad's face as he rolled his eyes and slowly shook his head was a picture.
Bobby was the best player I ever saw in the sixties. You can listen to people's opinion on how nice or miserable he might be but, you can't argue about his football ability.
Jack Charlton was interviewed over the aftermath of the England v Argentina Quater Final when the Argies tried to get into the England dressing room. When Asked whatvdid you say he replied " let em in ".
Never the same after Munich...Jack said that... He did give a wave to the fans at BP when he was Preston boss.
You can think what you like. My comments are based on one of my closest friends spending an entire day with him in Paris a few years back and Me spending an entire weekend with Jackie and his Missus about 5 years ago. Now Jackie may have been playing up to the story that they don't get on as brothers, but my friend (I was best man at his wedding) has no reason to say something just for the sake of it. Bottom line who the **** cares ultimately. Great player mind.
There was that advert in the '80s, some bloke on holiday in Latin America mentions he's English to a local - the local's reply is .... Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stealez Can't recall which ad it was for the life of me.
I met Bobby in 1998 at OT. Being an 8 year avid Man Utd fan at the time I knew exactly who he was and I was too shy to ask him for his autograph - until I finally plucked up the courage and he seemed really nice but fairly quiet. Norman Whiteside was in the room next door absolutely hammered!
