Djenepo looks a good player, but I can’t give “has been our best player” to anyone who has started one game (or is it 2?), half of one being as a left wing back (where he most definitely wasn’t our best player). Yes, he looks good, but not our best player. Prior to the Chelsea game, we had a few doing ok to good. Romeu, Boufal, Redmond being up there and Adams looked good despite not scoring. I know the mark isn’t high, but ...
I think JWP has underperformed this year - he just isn't at his last year's level. That said, I think with VAR this year Ralph keeps him on the pitch for all those penalties we are meant to be getting. You wait, we will drop him then get 2 or 3 pens in a game
JWP's set pieces have also taken a massive downturn as the season has gone on. Pre season and first 3 or so matches he was averaging a clear cut chance every 2 corners which I was thinking earlier was really good but since then he's barely created any. His direct free kicks have been poor all season. I still want him in the team as he offers something different from the direct running at players of Djenepo, Boufal, Armstrong etc. And is less effective as a sub, but I cant argue he is badly out of form. I will say he, like tadic, has always played better when the other attackers have been in form. Whether that his because the attackers play better because he is creating chances, or he is creating chances because the other attackers are creating space and runs he can pick out etc I don't know.
Any shred of optimism that the 0-9 would be a wake up call and that things would start to pick up has now been extinguished
October was not a very good month for us and optimism is diminishing for a decent season both on and off the pitch. A change of month isn't going to fix things especially with man city and arsenal away but our season could still turn on one moment, what ever that may be and that is why we are still optimistic.
