Crystal Palace interested in Portsmouth goalkeeper

The 22-year-old stopper has been in impressive form for the League One club in the second half of the season.

And the Eagles are weighing up a move for Bass, who is contracted to Pompey until the summer of 2023.

He has played 23 matches in all competitions for Kenny Jackett’s side, who saw their promotion hopes ended after defeat in the play-offs earlier this week.

Jackett rejected any talk of cashing in on Bass earlier this year, speaking in March he told the Portsmouth News: “Selling him is not something we have considered.

“He has caught our eye – that’s the main thing. I hope he stays here and I hope he stays here for a long time and keeps improving.

“He’s a young player and young players want to break through, they want to establish themselves and do well for the club and he is no different.

“I don’t see anything else other than Alex being at Pompey and doing well. We’ll see if there is anything in the future, you don’t know.”

Three pieces of possible transfer news today:-

    1) Left back Brandon Haunstrup has turned down a new contract offer with increased wages from Pompey, and is apparently in talks with Scottish Premier League Kilmarnock, on a free transfer.

    2) Pompey are considering a season long loan deal for 20 year old left back Alex Cochrane from Brighton and Hove Albion. He is an England youth international.

    3) 24 year old Irish international winger Ronan Curtis is being tracked by Championship side Brentford, as a replacement for their possible Chelsea bound Algerian international winger Said Benrahma.

Experienced left back Lee Brown is currently negotiating a new contract with Pompey. Let us hope he signs it !

Forest Green Rovers have signed former Portsmouth and Tottenham goalkeeper Luke McGee on a two-year-deal.

McGee turned down a new contract with Pompey having made 55 appearances after signing from Spurs in 2017.

"I'm delighted to get the deal done and can't wait to get started and put my roots down," the 24-year-old said.

"I've had positive chats with head coach Mark Cooper and Forest Green Rovers are an ambitious club, who meet my objectives."

Portsmouth and Sunderland linked with move for former Cardiff City striker now playing in Australia
The forward built up a reputation as a super sub and is among the highest English scorers in the 21st century.

Portsmouth have been linked with a bizarre move for former Reading and Cardiff City striker Adam Le Fondre.

The 33-year-old is currently plying his trade in Australia with Sydney FC, where he is currently top of the scoring charts with 18 goals in 21 games for the table toppers.

After a stellar career in England spanning 14 years, he made the move to Australia in 2018 and has continued to find the back of the net Down Under.

Le Fondre, a former Premier League striker with the Royals, is currently the sixth highest scoring Englishman in the 21st century, and according to Football League World, is being eyed up by Portsmouth and fellow League One side Sunderland, as well as clubs in India and the rest of the EFL.

Le Fondre is a proven goalscorer in English football but after spells at Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers, decided his future was best served abroad.

The link seems a bizarre one, given the striker seems to be winding down his career in Australia, but given his goalscoring form he could be keen on a move back to England to prove his worth in the EFL.

Portsmouth are stocked up in that position, with Ellis Harrison and John Marquis both likely to be ahead of Le Fondre if a move does materialise and Reeco Hackett-Farichild waiting in the wings, however with Brett Pitman having left the club, a vacancy for an experienced striker is now open.

Having build up a reputation as a super-sub during his time at Reading, scoring a then record eight goals from the bench in 2012/13 season, Kenny Jackett could see him as the perfect man to come on and make a difference in a closing stages of games.

Given the salary cap proposals in the EFL and the uncertain financial minefield clubs are treading over following the coronavirus pandemic, Le Fondre could be the perfect cheap option to replace Pompey hero Pitman.

However, given his age and the fact that Portsmouth do have options up front, a move may depend on whether Jackett sees himself preferring one or two men up front this season and may chose to give Hackett-Fairchild his chance in the side.

The youngster can also operate as a wide man and that may pave the way for Le Fondre to come in as third choice, but with spending already expected to limited, Portsmouth may prefer a loan or free transfer for a third choice striker.

Le Fondre still has a year remaining on Sydney FC contract, so a fee would likely be required to bring him back to the EFL.

Brandon Haunstrup has left Pompey to sign for Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock.

The 23-year-old defender was out of contract with the Blues and turned down the offer of a new deal.

He will now link up with former Fratton team-mate Nicke Kabamba at the Rugby Park outfit, who finished eighth in the top-flight last term.

Haunstrup made 57 appearances after progressing through the Pompey ranks, scoring his only goal in an FA Cup victory at Harrogate Town.

Portsmouth Football Club would like to thank Brandon for his service at Fratton Park and wish him well for the next stage of his career.

Former Portsmouth loanee Sean Raggett released by parent club Norwich
The defender formed a solid partnership with Christian Burgess during the 2019/20 season and has said he would be open to a Pompey return.

He is also wanted by both Oxford United and Gillingham, who he has already spoken to.

The defender made 38 appearances this season for Pompey in a campaign that ended in play-off disappointment and formed a solid partnership with Christian Burgess at centre-back.

Raggett got better and better as the season went on and Kenny Jackett had admitted that he would be keen to keep Raggett at Fratton Park, and that might still be reality.

Defender set for Yeovil trial following his Portsmouth departure
Matt Casey is set to undergo a pre-season trial at Yeovil following his Pompey release.

The Blues held the option of an additional year but chose not to trigger that clause.

6' 8" tall centre half Casey made three appearances for Kenny Jackett's side after graduating through the club's academy.

Despite being told of his release by Pompey during lockdown amid the coronavirus crisis, the Botley lad opted to extend his deal to cover any potential injuries ahead of the League One play-offs.

He wasn't required, however, as the Blues suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Oxford in the semi-finals.

Casey is now preparing to train with Yeovil when they return to training, after losing to Barnet in their National League play-off eliminator last week.

The 20-year-old trained with the Glovers with a view to a loan after departing the Hawks, but a move didn't come to fruition.

However, Yeovil manager Darren Sarll will again run the rule over Casey as he seeks to win a contract at Huish Park.

Portsmouth & Oxford set sights on signing midfielder who has just quit Sunderland.

please log in to view this image

Apparently both Pompey and Oxford United are chasing the signing of 23 year old 6' tall midfielder Ethan Robson from Sunderland on a Bosman free.

Robson enjoyed a successful spell on loan at Grimsby last season where he greatly impressed Mariners boss Ian Holloway.

He arrived to Blundell Park in January and scored three goals in 16 League Two appearances to help Grimsby to a 15th-placed finish.

It was the second loan spell of the Englishman’s career having spent the early part of 2019 with Dundee FC, where he played 13 times.

Oxford and Portsmouth both narrowly missed out on promotion to the Championship earlier this month as Wycombe Wanderers won the Play Offs.

Both sides see Robson, who can play across the midfield, as an ideal addition to their squad as they look to go one better in the 2020/21 campaign.

Robson, who came through the Academy of Light, made just 14 appearances for his boyhood club.

A move to Portsmouth or Oxford would see him lining up against his former teammates next season.

Would this guy really add to the quality of the squad? Looking at his CV, he is not a player who would make the grade in the Champioship, so Oxford he is all yours.

Rovers defender’s permanent move halted, but could move on loan.

please log in to view this image

6' 3" Rovers defender Charlie Mulgrew was in line for a permanent move to League One side Portsmouth, but it is very unlikely now due to the new salary cap implemented in the third and fourth tiers.

According to reports in Portsmouth, there was discussions of the Scotland international moving to the South Coast, but the new £2.5m salary cap has scuppered any permanent deal.

However, 34 year old Mulgrew could make a loan switch, with the wages being covered via a loan fee, which is not included in the salary cap calculations.

Mulgrew is now in the final year of the three-year contract he signed back in League One, and with just two Rovers appearances made last season, it is expected he will leave the club.

The Scottish centre-back was a key figure in the promotion season from the third tier, scoring 14 times in an extraordinary season for a defender, including the goal that sent Rovers up at Doncaster.

However, he spent the first half of last season on loan at Wigan Athletic, before returning in January, but he still struggled to get into the starting eleven, only featuring in the post-lockdown defeat at Barnsley.

Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is now apparently willing to sell right back or central midfielder Ross McCrorie. Fellow Scottish Premier League club Hibernian have already had an offer rejected by Rangers.

Do Pompey have the "readies" available to make an offer to sign him permanently ? Do hope so !!

Leeds United prospect Leif Davis linked with Stoke City and Portsmouth.

please log in to view this image

The Mirror claims that 20-year-old Leif Davis is a wanted man in the Potteries and at League One Portsmouth on a season-long loan.

They write: "The promising left-back has made 10 appearances during the past two seasons under Marcelo Bielsa... and signed a new three-and-a-half year deal tying him to Leeds until the summer of 2023.

"But with Stuart Dallas, Barry Douglas and Ezgjan Alioski ahead of him in the pecking order, Davis is set to gain experience elsewhere.

Former Portsmouth midfielder Adam May is on trial at Bristol Rovers after Fratton Park release.
The young midfielder is being considered by Rovers boss Ben Garner after his time at Pompey came to an end.

He is on trial with Bristol Rovers and featured in their second friendly game of the season on Saturday, a 2-1 win over Exeter City at the Mem.

He played the second half of the win in the midfield and manager Ben Garner will now look to make a decision on his future, with the Gas being one of the most active sides in the transfer market so far this summer.

Forest Green Rovers, Cambridge United, Mansfield Town and Crawley Town had all also been linked with a move for the free agent after his Pompey release, but Rovers appear to have made the first move for the 22-year-old.

Ipswich Town and Portsmouth interested in Liverpool midfielder Ben Woodburn.

please log in to view this image

The 20-year-old is certain to go out on loan again from Anfield after Jurgen Klopp made a decision on his short-term future.

Woodburn spent time at Oxford last year, but he was limited to 16 appearances, due to a fractured foot.

Despite his injury troubles, he had one goal and five assists for the U’s last season. Now his performances have attracted more suitors at the same level of Oxford.
Goal.com reports that the League One pair are interested in taking the Nottingham-born youngster to their clubs.

Woodburn would feel at home with Ipswich, as they currently have four senior Welsh players on their books at Portman Road. Pompey have Ellis Harrison at Fratton Park, as well as Wales U17 international Harvey Rew.

However, there is also interest from the Eredivise for Woodburn, a league which has been beneficial to British youngsters like Dominic Solanke, Marcus Edwards and Mason Mount.

Bundesliga outfit Fortuna Düsseldorf had also been reportedly interested in the 5' 10" Wales international attacking midfielder, but German outlet Bild says the German club are prioritising other positions.
