According to ESPN, the Blues are supposedly keen on a loan move for 19 year old Gunners keeper James Hillson, competing for his signature along with the likes of Leeds, Luton, Barnsley and Sunderland.

Emirates boss Mikel Arteta apparently holds the former Reading academy youngster in high regard and is keen to get him playing regular senior football to enhance his development.

A strange rumour, seeing as Pompey already have at least four keepers on their books in Alex Bass, Craig MacGillivray, Luke McGee and young American signing Jordan Turnbull, with the possibility of Luke McGee departing end of the season, and another talented youngster in Taylor Seymour from Lewes joining us for next season ! We will have to wait and see !!

It does seem odd. I would have thought a midfield creator would be high on the list of needs, plus another centre back, right back and left back.

    Teenage Trio Offered New Deals

Pompey have offered third year scholarships to three of their academy players.

Harry Kavanagh, Alfie Stanley and Eoin Teggart have been handed the chance to extend their deals at Fratton Park.

The trio are all aged 18, with full-back Kavanagh and striker Stanley hailing from Portsmouth, while winger Teggart – a Northern Ireland youth international – was born in Belfast.

Academy manager Mark Kelly said: “They all deserve this opportunity, but have to get their heads down and be ready to go again.

“When football does resume for us, they’ll have to work extremely hard to get in and around Kenny Jackett’s squad. It’s a real challenge and they have to be ready to go.

“Alfie has scored a lot of goals this season, while Harry settled down in his loan spell at Bognor and produced good performance levels.

“Eoin made his debut for the first team in the Leasing.com Trophy and has got plenty of pace and crossing ability – now he just needs to hone in on a few things.”

Stan Bridgman, Liam Kelly and Ethan Robb have not been offered deals, while Tom Bruce and Leon Pitman will remain with the club as they continue their rehabilitation from long-term injuries.

Kelly added: “We’ve got a long-term relationship with all the boys and that will continue for those who are not staying.

“It will be interesting to see what they choose to do next and we’ll be there to support them in their next steps.”

Portsmouth have emerged as serious contenders to sign Dunfermline’s 23 year old star striker Kevin Nisbet.

Courier Sport can reveal that the English League One side made the biggest January bid for the 23-year-old – going higher than both Dundee United and Hibs – and are keeping tabs on developments north of the border.

The 6' 1" striker scored 18 goals in 25 matches last season. The previous season he scored 29 goals in 34 league games for Raith Rovers.

He looks intelligent. Sign him. Well Wooperts´do you expect Curtis to be around next season? He is probably PFC´s most valuable asset but how much could we get for him now?

I think if Pompey don't get promoted, then he may well move on. Due to Covid-19, possible transfer fees may well reduce in size. I do hope he stays, as he is such a talented player with an eye for goals. He cost us around £100,000 from Derry City, but goodness knows how much we would get for him.

I'm not 100% certain, but believe that in addition to Bradley Lethbridge and Luke McGee who are definitely leaving, the other players are Christian Burgess, Lee Brown, Oli Hawkins, Brett Pitman, Brandon Haunstrup and Joe Hancott.

Plus the departure of the loanees. That is six members of the first team squad. Add the loanees, that is nine. If promotion is achieved, and I would't put past Pompey to do it, that is a considerable rebuilding job. Even if promotion is missed, it is still a rebuilding job.

All three players are at the end of their contracts. No real surprise they have been released. Hope they find new clubs quickly.

Portsmouth monitoring Matty Taylor situation as Bristol City striker set to become free agent.

Portsmouth are monitoring 30 year old Bristol City striker and current Oxford United loanee Matty Taylor, Hampshire Live understands.

The 5' 9" striker has been on stellar form this season for Oxford in League One, scoring 13 league goals in 26 league games and has turned the heads of the Pompey staff.

However, the Hampshire side are facing competition from his current loan club and it is understood that the Us are his first choice.

As he was born in Oxford, I would imagine they have the better chance of signing him, but who knows !!

Portsmouth targeting Leicester defender Josh Knight who's also wanted by Peterborough.

please log in to view this image

It is understood the Blues have the 6' 1" Leicester City defender high on their radar as they plot their summer recruitment plans.

But Kenny Jackett's men will also face competition from Peterborough, following Knight's impressive loan spell at London Road this season.

Pompey will need to bolster their centre-back options, with Christian Burgess set to depart the club after the League One play-off campaign.

Knight is one player who’s been identified, with Jackett keen on a potential loan move for next term.

The 22-year-old has returned to Leicester after spending the past one-and-a-half campaigns at third-tier rivals Posh.

Knight first joined Peterborough on loan in January 2019 and made eight appearances during his first taste of senior football.

He returned to the club last summer and was a key player for Darren Ferguson’s side when fit.

Knight featured 26 times and scored three goals as Peterborough’s promotion push fell short after the season was curtailed amid the coronavirus crisis.

His final outing was in his side’s 2-0 win over Pompey before the shutdown of football in March.

The Posh also made a bid to sign him on a permanent basis during the January transfer window but it was rebuffed by Leicester.

Knight has now returned to his parent club, although Ferguson keen to bring him back again to London Road.

However, the attraction of Championship football should Pompey be promoted will give Jackett more leverage in the race for the centre-half’s signature.

The centre-back is yet to feature in the second tier during his career and it would be a step in the right direction.

Knight, who can also operate as a defensive midfielder, has a year remaining on his King Power Stadium deal. He’s made just a solitary first-team appearance for the Foxes – a 4-1 EFL Cup win over Sheffield United in 2017.

Pompey will be in the market for at least one central defender during the summer transfer window.

Fans’ favourite Burgess has already agreed to join Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, although he’s been given the green light to feature in the play-offs.

Sean Raggett is also available to face Oxford next week after extending his deal, but his loan from Norwich will expire come the end of the Blues’ campaign.

Jackett has admitted he’d been keen to keep the ex-Lincoln man at Fratton Park permanently.

Meanwhile, Jack Whatmough and Paul Downing remain under contract, although the latter has been firmly out of favour since arriving from Blackburn last summer.

Youngster Matt Casey is to be released at the end of the season, despite having signed a short-term extension in case he’s needed for the play-offs.

It must be very difficult for the Pompey scouts at this time, seeing as we don't yet know if we will be in the Championship or League One next season.
Are these 'targets' players we will need to consolidate Championship membership or players who will bolster our dominant position at the League One table?

According to a report from The Portsmouth News, Portsmouth’s out of contract midfielder Adam May is wanted by League Two trio Mansfield Town, Cambridge United and Crawley Town. National League outfit Yeovil Town have also been said to be keen on the Portsmouth midfielder.

Portsmouth midfielder Adam May will be leaving Fratton Park this summer. May has signed a contract extension to keep him with the club until the end of the campaign but will be departing once their play-off run comes to an end. Now, it has emerged that he is attracting significant transfer interest from League Two and the National League.

May, who has been with Portsmouth for his entire career (excluding loan spells away) will be departing his boyhood club this summer. He came through the club’s academy and now, at 22, will be on his way out.

May has spent time on loan with the likes of Sutton United (24 appearances, one goal), Aldershot Town (12 appearances, three goals and one assist), Swindon Town (13 appearances, one goal) and Boreham Wood (two appearances, one goal). The midfielder has also notched up 30 appearances for Portsmouth’s senior side, laying on three assists in the process.

Promising midfielder makes move to Finland after Portsmouth exit.

Stan Bridgman has moved to Finland to take the next step in his football education after departing Pompey.

The promising midfielder has agreed a move to Pallo-lirot after his summer release following his scholarship coming to a close.

The former Purbrook Park School student will link up with former Blues academy coach Scott Green who joined the outfit last year. Pompey boss Kenny Jackett thinks it will be a good move for the 18-year-old.

Pallo-lirot play in the Finnish second division - or Kakkonen - with former academy youngsters Oscar Johnston and James Whiting moving to the club last year. They were followed by Joe Dandy in January.

Blues academy boss, Mark Kelly, told The News last year he was looking to build links with the Rauma-based club.

Announcing Bridgman’s arrival, Green told the Pallo-lirot website: Stanley is a strong and fast player. He has an eye for scoring goals and is technically proficient. Also good in the air and has a great defensive attitude.

    Pompey Retained List: Summer 2020

Portsmouth Football Club can confirm that five players have left the club following the expiration of their contracts.

Christian Burgess, Matt Casey, Oli Hawkins, Adam May and Brett Pitman have all departed.

Burgess – who made 210 appearances and was part of the side that memorably secured the League Two title in 2017 – opted not to extend his Pompey stay and has signed for Belgian outfit Royal Union Saint-Gilloise.

Alex Bass, James Bolton, Andy Cannon, Ben Close, Ronan Curtis, Paul Downing, Gareth Evans, Reeco Hackett-Fairchild, Marcus Harness, Ellis Harrison, Craig MacGillivray, John Marquis, Bryn Morris, Tom Naylor, Duncan Turnbull, Jack Whatmough and Ryan Williams are all still under contract.

The club are in negotiations with defenders Lee Brown and Brandon Haunstrup, whose deals have now expired.

Ross McCrorie, Cameron McGeehan, Sean Raggett and Steve Seddon have returned to their parent clubs following the end of their loan spells and we are grateful to Rangers, Barnsley, Norwich and Birmingham.

Pompey would like to thank all those departing players for their service to the club and wish them well for the future.

Bristol Rovers face competition from clubs in Scotland for Portsmouth left-back

please log in to view this image

Bristol Rovers are still keen on Portsmouth defender Brandon Haunstrup but may face competition from teams in Scotland including Kilmarnock, according to a report.

The Gas were reportedly considering a move for Haunstrup in January, however Pompey boss Kenny Jackett said he wasn't for sale and Rovers were already stocked up in that department.

However, with Tareiq Holmes-Dennis now departing, Portsmouth News reports that Rovers are still keen on Haunstrup with his contract set to end imminently.

My impression was that Haunstrup was an improving player last season to the extent he had opportunities.
He also showed some adaptability by performing well at right back when needed. His opportunities were severely limited by two loanees - Sneddon at LB and McCrorie, basically a mid-fielder, at right back. With Brown and Bolton the remaining backs I would like to see Brendon remain.
From his own perspective though he should be seeking better opportunities of first team football, and even if he sees opportunities at Fratton Park with the current loanees returning to their clubs he might reasonably be nervous about further loanees being signed and pushing him down the pecking order - again.
Blotting out opportunities for the clubs juniors is the hidden cost of getting loanees that come and go.
McCrorie came with a reputation last season. He showed endeavor ( and suffered injury which could not have been predicted). The opportunities he was given limited those of signed players so were not an investment in subsequent seasons. Bearing this in mind I see his loan as an overall negative.
Part of the trouble is that the parent club of the loanees is promised that the loanee will get opportunities and such promises sometimes appear to override opportunities for signed players.
