Grandson 8 asked me to play him a song like he's never heard before, he got this , now he's watching this non stop on YouTube, I'm sure his parents will thank me one day
On this day in 1985 this was the number one album in the UK, without question The Style Councils most consistent album, I believe it stands amongst Wellers finest work and I can can offer no higher praise. It's also probably his most 'political' album written at the height of Thatcherism, and sadly songs like Walls Come Tumbling Down, Homebreakers, and All Gone Away remain as relevant to Britain in 2023 as they were in 1985. please log in to view this image
The Style Council reminds me of the time in our local pub we had a lad who was a Jam / Weller total fanboy , he wore a black arm band for weeks after the Jam broke up and was in total shock after the fateful episode of the Tube , eventually he came round to the Style council but went a bit too far the Friday night he turned up in full cycling gear without a bike
The Jam were massively better than anything he did afterwards. Just a personal opinion - others may disagree. I’ve never really listened to his solo stuff so I might be wrong, but I don’t think so.
I'll arrange a meeting between you and The Changing Man to Duke it out on that , personally I really liked his first 4 solo albums plus live wood then found a period of his when I liked some tracks but recently I have been into his newer out put
I remember playing this when mum walked into the room and asked who it was as she really liked it, The Rolling Stones, , she pulled a face like she had caught dad doing the dirty with the next door neighbour and said I hate them
You are , But I am bound to say that, I love his music from the In The City to Fat Pop, in my opinion he is the best songwriter/performer of my generation and one the of the greatest this country has ever produced. But that's my opinion and you of course are perfectly entitled to your own. The world would be a dull place if we all liked the same things.
An afternoon of bbq leg of lamb marinated in red wine rosemary and garlic washed down with some fine reds this man shall be my soundtrack for the rest of the evening
There's only one great Aussie pop song. In fact it is one of the truly great pop songs - and the video is a lot of fun!
If a singer was ever associated with just one song it may have been Astrud! But what a song it was, there are obviously many others that she did record but this was the pinnacle of her recording career in terms of 'popularity'.
It was Charlie Byrd who introduced Bossa Nova into the States. He told Stan Getz about it and they made an album together please log in to view this image Which made lots of money. Byrd had to fight Getz for his share. Getz was a sublime saxophonist but not so sublime as a human being. Stan Tracey the pianist at Ronnie Scot's was once asked if he enjoyed playing with all the American Jazz Stars. "Yeah I did, all except Stan Getz, what an arsehole. Getz discovered Gilberto and I wont' go into that as she has recently died.
I recommend the Shane meadows TV series on BBC The Gallows pole for the music soundtrack alone a good blend of traditional folk songs and ballads mixed with some eclectic rock tracks Read the book recently which is a real slice of social history
Aside to that story....I went to school with and was a mate of Stan Tracey's son Clark. A fine jazz musician in his own right. And an aside to an aside...(for Proggies) Stan Tracey taught Dave Lawson (Greenslade) to play piano!
Today I learned this song is about Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie Today I also learned that this song should stuck the boot in way harder
