Season report R6 (PL matches = 38) . Measure changes from last season are stated as percentages, or as "F X" (where a measure has changed by a factor of F) . -------- General - goal diversity -- scored : 14.2857% -- assisted : 7.69231% Spurs Defence - clean sheet : -37.5% - saves : 13.2653% - offsides : 9.30233% - fouls : -7.29927% - yellow card : 4% - red card : -66.6667% Attack - attempts : 5.49898% -- off target : 8.125% -- on target : 3.62538% -- blocked : 9.77444% -- scored : 1.44928% --- direct : 80% --- assisted : 16.2791% --- headed : 22.2222% --- open play : 20% -- free kick : -33.3333% -- direct : -50% -- indirect : 0% -- corner kick --- total : 6.15385% --- scored : 4 X -- penalty kick --- total : 20% --- missed : 2.63158% --- scored : 0% -- throw-in --- total : 2.63158% -- OG --- total : -66.6667% --- fluke : -2 X --- forced : -50% Opposition Defence - clean sheet : -55.5556% - saves : -10.1449% - offsides : 6.45161% - fouls : 9.84456% - yellow card : 11.9403% - red card : 2 X Attack - attempts : 5.69106% -- off target : 0.52356% -- on target : 8.9701% -- blocked : -3.77358% -- scored : 57.5% --- direct : 22.2222% --- assisted : 59.0909% --- headed : -50% --- open play : 59.2593% --- free kick : -66.6667% ---- direct : 0% ---- indirect : -2 X -- corner kick --- total : 2.07254% --- scored : 0% -- penalty kick --- total : 50% --- missed : 0% --- scored : 50% -- throw-in --- total : 0% -- OG --- total : -66.6667% --- fluke : 0% --- forced : -66.6667%
Well, that is that. I hope the average 50 odd of you who have looked at the stats each week/report have found it time well spent. I've done this as accurately/professionally as I would in the "day job" (sadly not fully automated - I think the Spurs assisted/direct goal measures are messed up due to accrued "copy/paste" error ) . My "executive summary" would be that this stuff tells you about performance, but has very little in terms of "actionable information" (the data source used does not provide what would be required) . That aside, IMHO there are aspects to go thru, and so I shall ...
1. General - overall = W18 / D6 / L14 (W22 / D5 / L11) - best result sequence -- overall = W9 / D3 / L4 (W11 / D2 / L3) -- clean sheet = 2 (3) - goal diversity -- scored : 14.2857% -- assisted : 7.69231% So on "like for like" with last season : 1. won / drew / lost = 4 less / 1 more / 3 more respectively. 2. the best results sequence achieved was worse 3. the maximum number of consecutive games a "clean sheet" was achieved, was worse 4. goal diversity (in terms of those who scored/assisted) was effectively the same
2. Spurs attack Attack - attempts : 5.49898% -- off target : 8.125% -- on target : 3.62538% -- blocked : 9.77444% -- scored : 1.44928% --- direct : 80% --- assisted : 16.2791% --- headed : 22.2222% --- open play : 20% -- free kick : -33.3333% -- direct : -50% -- indirect : 0% -- corner kick --- total : 6.15385% --- scored : 4 X -- penalty kick --- total : 20% --- missed : 2.63158% --- scored : 0% -- throw-in --- total : 2.63158% -- OG --- total : -66.6667% --- fluke : -2 X --- forced : -50% The general outcome is the attack is not much different to last season. A small increase in : - attempts on goal, and those that were blocked or off target. - goals scored via headers The significant changes were goals scored from : - corners - OG The goals scored from corners increased by a factor of 5. Goals scored by OG decreased by 4. Two less forced OG, and no fluke OG. Finally the opposition managed to prevent the Spurs attack from scoring only 4 times over the season.
3. Opposition attack Opposition Attack - attempts : 5.69106% -- off target : 0.52356% -- on target : 8.9701% -- blocked : -3.77358% -- scored : 57.5% --- direct : 22.2222% --- assisted : 59.0909% --- headed : -50% --- open play : 59.2593% --- free kick : -66.6667% ---- direct : 0% ---- indirect : -2 X -- corner kick --- total : 2.07254% --- scored : 0% -- penalty kick --- total : 50% --- missed : 0% --- scored : 50% -- throw-in --- total : 0% -- OG --- total : -66.6667% --- fluke : 0% --- forced : -66.6667% The headline figure is that the opposition scored TWENTY THREE more goals. A modest increase on attempts on goal and those that were on target, but a 59% increase in results. The stats show that the Spurs defence was not victims of headed goals or OG (those measures imptoved) , or of free/corner kicks (that was effectively unchanged) , or conceding penalties (a negligible increase) . The Spurs defence was simply passed through in open play.
4. Spurs defence Spurs Defence - clean sheet : -37.5% - saves : 13.2653% - offsides : 9.30233% - fouls : -7.29927% - yellow card : 4% - red card : -66.6667% The notable measure is the drop in clean sheets (from 16 to 10) . I cannot say whether that played a significant part in the overall results, but I suspect that this measure may well be a KPI for a team that wants to be champions, finish in the top 4 etc. The increase in the number of saves made may be significant (if the total is increasing then the number of on target attempts that a GK cannot reach may also be increasing accordingly) .
5. Opposition defence Opposition Defence - clean sheet : -55.5556% - saves : -10.1449% - offsides : 6.45161% - fouls : 9.84456% - yellow card : 11.9403% - red card : 2 X The drop in clean sheets is most notable. However, as with the drop in saves made, it does not appear to have made any overall difference to the results of the Spurs attack.
I think this infographic says it all please log in to view this image Not one player in the top twenty for playing under pressure sums up how porous our midfield was often found to be - and this is not a new issue, it goes back to the days of the Winkssoko pivot, and yet in spite of many and various changes in midfield personnel since then if an opponent presses our midfield our passing goes off a cliff True there are a couple of extenuating circumstances for this, first of all Conte's tactics invite pressure onto our midfield so that is always likely to skew the results downwards (or further downwards...), but it also has to be said if Bissouma played in his more natural role instead of the ersatz Kante role that Conte envisioned for him it is possible that he and/or Bentancur could have crept onto this list But make no mistake, our midfield's lack of press resistance has been an issue ever since Dembele started to break down and has never been adequately fixed
Unless there is a significant demand to the contrary, I will not be doing this article for the 2023-24 season.
