Rumours that Steve Bruce is getting a new contract even if the club is relegated. Apparently the club believe that covid 19 has hampered Bruce's ability this season and feel his experience in the championship means he's the ideal man to take charge for a promotion push. Your thoughts?
Oh it definitely sounds very Mike Ashley esk. Im just still baffled by how he seems to be under no pressure whatsoever. Like it doesn’t matter almost if we get relegated. I don’t think there’s a manager in history who has had such a free ride. Imagine the attendances next season. If things are back to normal.
That's an incredibly bizarre theory, especially as Covid 19 was around last season and every other team has had to deal with it to....! By that logic has Covid 19 made Man City and Leicester extra good and only adversely effected us! In terms of excuses that one's scraping the ****ing barrel... Bottom line: Bruce is an average manager who is the kind of patsy Ashley loves cos Ashley can walk all over him. Bruce knows this job is way too good for him and will aihn a new contract in a heartbeat. Please be untrue.
Only theory I have on it is we have flirted with relegation 3 times in the past. Twice Ashley changed the manager, we went down. The one time he stuck it out (with Carver), we survived. Therefore the safer bet in his mind - particularly with the threat of having to spunk millions on a replacement - is to just keep Bruce on. The hiring of Jones was about keeping Bruce in place. New contract, though? Doubt it. There are a bunch of first team players with actual value that haven't even had a sniff of a new contract, why would Charnley spend any time sorting something for Bruce - aren't both Ashley and Charnley supposed to have one foot out the door? With a year left, there's zero need to extend his contract. Sounds like someone's stirring, which tends to happen when things are so depressingly bad. If it were to happen, then it would effectively kill takeover talk and would definitely be the (temporary) end for me.
More than just 3 times, 2012/13 season was a nightmare and we were only guaranteed safety with a few games to go.
Sure, all but one season has been ****ing miserable and a slow death march to 40 points, I mean the two we went down and the one where it went to the final game.
Regardless of if we stay up or not Bruce getting a new contract will have me done. It's not just the **** football, lack of any semblance of planning, the god awful interviews, the complete lack of self awareness or responsibility for his decisions - it's the lack of ambition as a club, as a whole. I did not like Rafa but there was a plan there to improve the club as a whole - yeah it may have only been a war of words to poke Ashley but at least it was something forward thinking. Bruce getting a new contract will just prove that we have no plan but to stay in the league and banking on the worst manager in the history of the league will not have me wasting my time, money and emotions on something that is effectively a lame duck.
Sounds like expectation management from the club. We go down, we stick with Bruce for another year BUT we don't give him a new contract, which is better than expected/feared. Stops open revolt among the fans without spending any money. Ashley's wet dream.
It’s mikes plan to keep us in the championship so that the takeover goes through without PL interference.
