I honestly always thought it was just a Navy barracks that expanded to take in the overspill of people that couldn't afford to live in Brighton or Portsmouth.

I never realised it was supposed to be posh.

It isn't posh, nobody here thinks it is, but it's a damn sight nicer than Portsmouth, and it's nicer than a lot of cities I've been to, haven't been to Hull so shan't compare. That said, it's not a great place, like most cities, it has some hellish parts. Don't go away with the impression all we think it's posh though!

It is not a navy barracks, it is a merchant port and luxury liner port. Portsmouth and Plymouth are where the navy is based.

I didn't say it was, Southampton has some terrible areas. Hampshire as a whole is very nice, but spoilt by Portsmouth and Southampton.

Ah, I guess they didn't want to devalue the 'Royal' Navy by basing it there.

Southampton are a bit like Cambridge, people forget about them when making a list of football teams for some reason.

It's just occurred to me I've been to Southampton a few times.

In footballing terms Southampton are a great model to base any promotion campaign on. The academy has and still is producing real talent. The wage structure has historically been tight. But are they a club who will stay up? Like City there are loads of plastic fans, just there for the big league and big games, but that is actually where the money is, attracting new fans. I want them to at least be still up when we get promotion, just so that I have another easy match to get too.
