Steve Harper Testimonial Update.

I'm not saying that he didn't play an important role in back up. Football is rare in that it is supposedly a game that play for the love of it and can do very well off. He paid his dues to be play more games than he did at Newcastle. There has to be a time in a players career where they question whther its time on the bench or time playing that is more important. This is regardless of level and pay (if he is as loyal as claimed). Otherwise people questions of ambition are inevitable.

Again not being critical.

 

I thoroughly enjoyed the night. Good to see some players that took me back down memory lane.

 

Great to see all of them back in the fold for a short while.

Some of them had taken better care of themselves than others, I was a bit surprised that Ginola had let himself go so much. He looked less like himself than most of the other guys. He did have a bad hand though. Still great to see him back though and still trying some of his trickery.

 

The only person that can ever answer what your asking truthfully is Steve Harper himself.
Has he been happy with his career or will he have regrets, we'll never know.

From a fans point of view, I take the stance that I couldn't care less what the reasons were why he stayed, as it has nothing to do with me. But I thank him for the time and effort he put into the club.

As is said earlier, a goalkeepers world is different to the rest of the team. There are only twenty of them playing any given week in the PL, otherwise they have to drop down to a lower level and even then the competition is fierce. Keepers stay at clubs for many years with the reality of knowing that they are second choice but with the knowledge that they are good enough to step up to the plate when needed.

What does it matter anyway, you say your not being critical, but you are by asking the question in the first place.
Why can't you just leave it that Harps had a good day and we the fans had a good day, money was earned for charity and even your manager seemed to enjoy himself.

 

Even though he got booed every time he touched the ball. He took it in good stead though and waved every time he got booed. Not with two fingers either.

 

I would love to be in his position. Just seems a bit of a waste of a career. He was talented enough to have done more. Like I said, he paid his dues to Newcastle and owed it to himself to have gone on to play more. It seems loyalty is being honoured here for the sake of it. It is one thing to be loyal, but it is even more of a thing to make a tangible impact. Can you honestly say that in the amount of time Harper spent there that the amount of performances do him justice? He could have moved away years ago for more regular games yet still have been regarded as being loyal.

 

Ridiculously good night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Great man given a great send off. Nights like that remind you how good our support is and why we support the club. Don't get me started on Franco...............

Newcastle and Milan legends turn out for Steve Harper's charity testimonial


Misty-eyed Newcastle fans packed St James’ Park last night as the greats who came within a whisker of winning the title made a nostalgic return.

Geordie fans paid homage to the legends including Alan Shearer, Rob Lee, Les Ferdinand, Peter Beardsley and Tino Asprilla as Steve Harper’s charity testimonial attracted a remarkable 50,793 punters.



The Toon Army turned out in force to salute one of Newcastle United’s loyalest servants - and raise thousands of pounds for North East charities.

Almost 51,000 fans, many of them families, packed into St James’ Park.

A St James' Park crowd of more than 50,000 unsurprisingly took great delight in seeing former midfielder Joey Barton put the Black Cats boss - who was booed throughout - on his backside in the second half.
