What a total bell end this bloke is.

Steven Taylor: I didn’t buckle under ‘we wish you were dead’ chants from Sunderland fans

Steven taylor was often in the thick of it against Sunderland

Few Newcastle United players received the reaction from Sunderland fans that Steven Taylor did – but he says he never buckled at the abuse.

The defender – whose 13 first-team seasons at St James’s Park were punctuated by a series of injuries – divided opinion on social media in the latter part of his career at the club.

But there was no such divide on Wearside.

Taylor, a boyhood Newcastle fan who was living his dream, was a player Sunderland supporters loved to hate.

The 30-year-old, now at MLS club Portland Timbers, says the abuse that came his way – both from the stands and Twitter – didn’t affect him.

“When you’re doing well at Newcastle, it’s the best in the world,” said Taylor.

“When things aren’t going well, there are always going to be people who are getting digged out.

“If you’re going to read that kind of stuff, you’re going to put yourself down.

“I know some of the players sometimes struggle with that.

“But the best thing to do is prove them wrong.

“You can’t turn up and sulk, you’re a professional footballer.

“It was difficult for everyone last season.

“No matter where you go, it’s part and parcel of being a professional footballer.

“If you can’t handle a bit of flak, you’re in the wrong game It makes you who you are.”

Sunderland fans chanted “Steven Taylor, we wish you were dead” during derbies.

“A lot of people could have buckled with that,” added Taylor, who turned down a new one-year deal at United in the summer.

Never seemed to be 'fit' for the SoL fixtures back end of his Mag career and when he was he was on the bench. I think he did buckle. I think he was hiding.

One thing I'll always remember him for is his birds **** suit.
Other than that he was just a ****e excuse for a footballer.

    All in one game.

Lose 3-0 in front of 52,000 screaming orcs.

    Taylor dive.

    Boyer and Dyer fighting.

    3 sent off.

Every time I see the title of this thread I picture Taylor in his therapist's office with his face buried in a fistful of tissues, sobbing "I didn't buckle! I didn't buckle!" over and over.

While remembering all the times he buckled.

    I remember that vividly.
Prior to the game I was in Newcastle central station bar waiting for a train to Glasgow.
I got chatting to some Villa fans & wished them luck.
Got up to Glasgow & went out on the swally.
When I woke up next day I went for a paper & when I read about it I almost pissed my pants. <laugh>
