It's a weird thing to say about Greaves because we went into last season with 3 left sided CBs. There's just no way we can say he's good enough after playing 3 mins of L1 football and the odd cup game. If we were in L1 next season, it's not an issue but it's a big step up
And Wimbledon who finished 6th bottom in league 1 last season isn't a step up to the championship.... !!!!?... or is it just the fact he used to be on Arsenals books..
What? That's an even odder thing to say. It's a step up for all our squad. But at least he's had 3 years in L1, won POTY in one of them and also has Blackburn & Barnsley after him so he's clearly not crap. Grant keeps saying we're going to push for the top 6, if we are, having McLoughlin as a backup is incredibly risky. He's barely played in 18 months, never played regularly in England before and couldn't get a look in for us in L1. I do like the lad, but we have to be sensible and realistic. First and foremost, we have to avoid a repeat of what happened last time we were in the Championship I couldn't care less where Wimbledon finished, I think there's pretty much a player or 2 from every side in L1 last season who would improve our squad.
But hang on, why are we ok with signing Randell Williams, when Exeter finished 15 places below them in the pyramid? The fact the whole team finished bottom six is irrelevant, statistics mean nothing to the individual and by all accounts he’s done just fine given his age, so why isn’t he worth a shot on such a low fee and wage?
We still need another centre back. Preferably someone with experience, who can dig in and lead the line when our backs are against the wall, which they invariably will be next season.
But it's not upto us, McCann has seen enough of him and has sufficient confidence to keep him on. That's why he was very much a part of our 'side last year'. McCann has proved to be ruthless when required.
McLoughlin also signed a new three year deal back in March, so McCann and the club obviously rate him, though at 24 he'd better get a move on getting in the first team. I've always liked him, but it would be a stretch to say Festus Arthur is challenging him so I reckon he'll be in and around the squad.
Absolutely. Ridiculous to suggest we can't trust him (McLoughlin). Though a couple of week ago. home supporters questioned that Sterling fella.
It's not ridiculous at all. It's far more ridiculous to suggest that we back up a young inexperienced CB who's never played at this level before, with an even more inexperienced CB who's not even played in the level below. At L1 level, it's not an issue, mainly as Greaves was a class apart. But it's a big step up. What if Greaves struggles for the first 6 months in the Champ? What then? We're completely screwed is what and it'll get to Jan and we'd be begging for another CB. It's nothing against McLoughlin, he's one for the future but he needs to play. 18 months without playing and if he doesn't get out and play this season, it'll be 2.5 years without playing. How on earth is he meant to improve? Let him get 40 appearances under his belt and come back a better player who can play regularly in the Championship. But for this season, we need to be sensible and make sure we have an insurance policy. Thomas will be on knack all with us, probably only £2/3k a week & gives us that insurance policy. We just need to make sure we get another defender in too and preferably one with a bit of experience.
Ok, Obviously Terry trusts him more than you. We absolutely need a right sided centre back as cover, maybe best if he can cover both.
We can't answer how much Grant trusts him until after the window is shut. Don't forget, last time in the Championship defensive frailties relegated us and should've cost Grant his job. He got a tonne of stick as well and definitely overcompensated last year because of it. We went into the campaign with 6 CBs, 5 of which are more than capable at L1 level. I don't expect 6 CBs but I can't see him allowing us to get exposed. Luke O'Nien hasn't gone anywhere yet, he'd do just fine along with Thomas.
It's good to see him get a team and move on. He's a very talented player, but as Rick Skelton put it, he always looked like a boy playing in men's football. Good luck to him, he will do well in a less physical environment.
I have no problems with our signings so far. No reason why good L1 and L2 players can’t make it in the Champ. Better players around you make you better yourself. Would seriously like to see a CB of the quality of Elphick come in though. Just to lead the line and add some nous to the defence. We never looked the same the same side when we lost him in the Jan. My thoughts are this will be our critical signing.
Explains a lot .. depends if the lad is wanting to come here and can push a move through or chooses to fight for his place there
