    Competition - Sky Bet Championship
    Venue - Swansea.com Stadium
    Date - 21 February 2023
    Kick off - 7:45pm

Following their 0-1 defeat away at Play-Off hopefuls Blackburn Rovers, next up for Russell Martin’s faltering Swansea squad is a home fixture against Stoke City.

Last Saturday, Daniel Ayala's 89th-minute header saw Blackburn Rovers beat the Swans 1-0 to boost their Championship play-off hopes.

Ayala powered home at the far post as Rovers snatched all three points from a forgettable game.

Blackburn's first league victory since New Year's Day lifts them to seventh, outside the top six on goal difference.

Remarkably, given their poor run, the Swans remained 12th having failed to build on their midweek victory over Blackpool.

The Swans’ play-off chances look increasingly slim thanks to their failure to find any consistency since the World Cup break, with the gap to sixth place now standing at seven points.

Whilst the Swans were losing at Ewood Park, Tuesday’s opponents Stoke City lost by the same score line at Blackpool when Mick McCarthy claimed his first win since he took charge as lan Poveda's early goal proved decisive.

The on-loan Leeds United midfielder was fed by Lewis Fiorini before firing a left-foot shot from just outside the box which deflected slightly past Potters keeper Matija Sarkic.

It lifted Blackpool off the bottom of the Championship, within two points of safety - and just six points behind 19th-placed Stoke, who themselves have only won twice in the league since Christmas.

For McCarthy himself, in his sixth game in charge at Bloomfield Road, after finishing with eight straight defeats at the Bluebirds in the autumn of 2021, it was his first victory as a manager in 17 months.

The Swans have played the Potters on 79 previous occasions, winning 25, losing 32 and drawing 22.

In the corresponding fixture last season, the Potters ran out comfortable 3-1 winners, with Stoke's high press being too much for the Swans, with the hosts at times unable to get out of their own half:

Turning to Tuesday evening, Stoke already realise that they are on the edge of a relegation battle, whilst I don’t think that Russell Martin recognises that potential defeats against both Stoke and Rotherham would mean that the Swans would be similarly immersed in a relegation dog fight.

With Bersant Celina likely to start, Stoke are virtually guaranteed at least 1 goal - 2 if Clucas is available.

Reluctantly, I’m going for a repeat of last year’s 1-3 result.

    Hope I’m wrong <cheers>

Martin has confirmed that Ryan Manning will (most likely) leave this Summer.

    Thanks Taff

Our confidence, especially at the back, must be so low. We need an early couple of goals to settle us. If we do then we should get the win else it's 0-0 till the 89th minute then a 1-0 win for Stoke

Six players left Swansea during the January transfer window, with the most notable transfer seeing Michael Obafemi join Burnley in a deal which is likely to be worth up to £4m, but not one transfer in?.......Martin said nobody "on the ground" in Wales can be "held accountable" for the failed window.

"That's not me blaming anyone, that's me being really honest with you and being really disappointed and frustrated," Martin said. "We'd chat for so many hours - me, Josh, Julian, the recruitment team - about what we need. The problem then arises that we don't have the final say here.

It's clear he is laying the blame squarely at the door of these Yankee scumbags..........<ok>

Morgan Whittaker makes his first start since returning to Swansea City as one of three changes for tonight's meeting with Stoke City.

The forward, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Plymouth, comes into the side in place of Jay Fulton, who is absent through injury.

Ollie Cooper is chosen in midfield as Luke Cundle drops out of the squad, while Matty Sorinola is preferred to Joel Latibeaudiere.

Andy Fisher continues in goal, and will once again have a three-man defence of Nathan Wood, Ben Cabango and Harry Darling ahead of him.

Ryan Manning and Sorinola will occupy the wing-back slots, with Joe Allen and captain Matt Grimes paired together in midfield.

Cooper and Whittaker will provide support for Joel Piroe in the final third.

Swansea City: Andy Fisher; Nathan Wood, Ben Cabango, Harry Darling; Matty Sorinola, Joe Allen, Matt Grimes (captain), Ryan Manning; Ollie Cooper, Morgan Whittaker; Joel Piroe.

Substitutes: Andreas Søndergaard, Olivier Ntcham, Liam Cullen, Joel Latibeaudiere, Kyle Naughton, Liam Walsh, Cameron Congreve.

Stoke City: Matija Sarkic, Morgan Fox, Jacob Brown, Tyrese Campbell, Dwight Gayle, Ben Wilmot, Ki-Jana Hoever, Will Smallbone, Dujon Sterling, Ben Pearson, Josh Laurent (captain).

Substitutes: Jack Bonham, Lewis Baker, Jordan Thompson, Connor Taylor, Nathan Lowe, Kahrel Reddin, Gabriel Adebambo.

Let’s not forget that Martin sidelined Benda, Fulton and Whittaker to name but 3 - they all appear to have proved/be proving that his judgement is suspect.

Should he have got rid of Lowe, Bidwell and Bennett amongst others?

We have the worst defensive record for the first half - we have conceded 27 goals in the first half: the worst record in the Championship
