Done Italy twice by train from Hull in the 70's, once with my brother and then with my late wife, both times with backpacks and tent, all the way down to Naples/Sorrento. Brilliant people and classy dressers, but Naples was a very poor city, whereas Sorrento area very prosperous.
We're away to Gran Canaria at Easter. Like the Canaries at that time of the year. Warm but not stupid hot. I fancied the Italian lakes this summer but as I say the Missus is currently obsessing on the Maldives. This is based on one blog linked from Bookface mind. She's the most easily swayed women I've ever spent 30 years married to. This will all change when she follows a link proclaiming the spiritual wonderments of hummingbird spotting in Papua New Guinea mind. A few months ago she had her heart set on visiting a kangaroo sanctuary in Alice Springs having watched a documentary about the stupid ****ers hopping infront of massive lorries. She seems to have forgotten that. I simply ensure that no talk of marsupials happens in Chez Shackleton lest she recalls that particular fruitcake desire.
Well Ernie, I can help. You all might remember I said I was moving over and I arrived yesterday. (Staying in London for a few days before heading up to Yorkshire. My first match will be the home match against Burnley on the 25th). Anyway, on the way over, we stopped at the Maldives for 6 nights. Believe me Ernie, the missus couldn't have made a better suggestion. It's an absolutely sensational place. In the Indian ocean not far from Sri Lanka, the weather is beautiful, the water crystal clear and the service and general atmosphere superb. We stayed on an island resort called Centara. For my part, it was wonderful and I'm really happy to be back in England. UP THE TIGERS!
Kinnell Carmine, I'd have thought that you'd have a load of associates who could see you right in Naples. The Amalfi Coast is magnificent. They was one of my wife's impulse bookings that I did enjoy. Stayed in Sorrento and loved it. Don't try driving there though, because you'll die.
Cheers, I'll have a look at that resort. A random recommendation from someone on the internet that I don't actually know. It fits her holiday selection criteria perfectly.
We are off to Perth (Western Australia not Scotland!) for a week in April, as my mate is coming across from good old 'Ull. Hopefully we are then going to Canada for about three weeks in August/September time, starting in Vancouver then going across to Ottawa and Toronto, but still have that to book. Good thing is we can fly straight into Vancouver from Brisbane. May need to beg some advice on where to visit from our Canadian brethren.
I've never been to the Maldives, but I've got a mate who's been pretty much everywhere and he rates it as the best place he's ever been. I used to be a regular visitor to Italy, but only Florence, which I loved (though it was work, not holiday).
There's an English pub called, umm, The English Pub. It's really good actually. There's a bar opposite it called The Scottish Bar. It's a run down sad excuse of a drinking establishment. Sorrento's a microcosm of the world writ large to be honest.
Maldives is my idea of hell....nowt to do apart from the beach / pool. Honestly it would be like a prison sentence for me. Prefere some culture like you get in the old cities around the world. Bollox to this desert island ****e..... saying that, I go wherever the misses books ☹️
errr, Female Friend has booked us a week in........Bloody Cleethorpes Sob Sob I am going to Romania ( Brasov ) And a week in Hunstanton.
I am looking at Sorrento in September. I have been to Naples and Pompeii and would like to dive Naples Bay. My view is that it is an area in a time warp. About 10 years behind and full of old buggers.
