    Seria A,

For many years the pinnacle of European football and a particularly glamorous league.

The nineties hold fond memories of Football Italia, James Richardson and watching the highlights and games of the big teams like Fiorentina, Roma, Lazio, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus and Parma to name but a few.

They had players like Del Piero, Zidane, Davids, Nesta, Cannavaro, Maldini, Inzaghi, Batistuta, Totti and even Paul Gascoigne.

Yet 20 years on they can now only scrape a win against a team like Southampton. A nothing team.

What do we reckon are the reason(s) for this decline?

What were/are your favourite team and favourite player of that era?

Yes occasionally it's right what you say it's pretty dull these days.

Probably why we're not in Europe!

Could you imagine Southampton going to Inter and almost winning 20 years ago?

    Unthinkable.

Yeah it is weird whats happened to Italian football.
Juve are the only ones still worth a damn, and they got hit hardest by the corruption scandal.

Massive corruption in the game (and across the country) ruined it really.

    Shame.

I'd still like to catch Totti before he retires.

Mafia run the game and everything really over there.

Not enough money over here is the big issue and smaller attendances. Without big money they struggle to attract the better players.

A lot of clubs struggle from being in authority owned Stadiums too. This is why Juventus moved and are reaping the rewards. Milan are looking to do the same.

Inter were ****e last night, no wonder they struggle to fill the ground if they serve up that tripe every week.

We should have got something definitely and was disappointed after the game. Stadium is fantastic though and atmosphere in our end amazing. Certainly won't be forgetting this experience any time soon

A liverpool fan looking to explain how a club could possibly experience a sharp decline ! Have you not been watching the chaos that has been going on at the club you support ?

Bloody hell only Rolf Harris has had a steeper fall from grace than lfc in the last 30 years

Well well HIAB, why don't you sign in as yourself? You're hatred of Liverpool is well documented with the terribly crafted mouser thread. He's a passionate saints fan unlike you're supposed to be but strangely spend your time brown nosing Spud fans. Explain.....

Italian football has suffered greatly from the 08 financial crash, particularly AC milan. Italian clubs rely on benefactors more than their European counterparts, look at Morrati at Inter and Berlesconi at AC. AC Milan's holding company is some huge financial services company which is managed by the Berlesconi family, after the crash this company experienced huge losses and laid off a lot of staff. While Berlesconi could obviously still invest in the squad given his own wealth, with unemployment at high levels in Italy and his company having let a lot of staff go he would have suffered quite the backlash. Also bear in mind Italian clubs earn very little in TV and merchandising revenue compared to other big european leagues.

Do I have to write down what we have won in "that 30 years of decline?"

It certainly beats winning the Hampshire league.

    Might as well:

    Liverpool Since 1986

    League Title x2
    FA Cup x 5
    League Cup x4
    Charity Shield x6
    Champions League x1
    UEFA Cup x1
    Super Cup x2

    Southampton Since 1986

    Division 2 winners x1

    Djimi Traoré Since 1986

    Charity Shield x1
    League Cup x1
    Champions League x1
    FA Cup x1

    lol

I hate to point this one out but we didn't win division 2... back to back promotions in second place <laugh>

We did win the JPT though... <whistle>

    You'll never win that ;)

Just for the record I don't have anything again Southampton <ok>

Unfortunately you have one absolute plank of a fan of which Southampton is the leverage!

Ie. Liverpool used to be good. The point I 'm making is where you stand now at the other side of one of footy's most embarrassing declines. Lpool finished 8th last year and don't even play in Europe this term. It hasn't been easy for me to see what was once a proud English institution go down the can, mate. I don't know who is worse, yourselves or BHS !

Good thread. Yeah I´ve noticed it now for some years. Inter & AC... a shadow.
