Sunderland Have More Empty Seats Than Every Other Premier League Club

Despite missing out on the north east top dogs award (which never gets mentioned unless the mackems fluke their way above Newcastle), Sunderland have found themselves once again the Premier League champions when it comes to empty seats.

Sunderland fans failed to fill 168,777 seats over the course of their 19 Premier League matches of the 2013/14 season, giving them a figure of 81.9% of seats filled.

In fact, as a testament to the popularity of the Premier League, it is quite remarkable that all but three of the twenty clubs had at least 92% of their seats filled over the course of the season.

Ironically, none of the three relegated clubs were in that bottom three in terms of percentage of seats sold.

As well as the mackems being rock bottom (top?), our friends at Villa were next worst, then Palace next.

In Newcastle’s case they had an occupancy rate of 96.2% which is a tribute to the number of season ticket holders and those buying single tickets, particularly in that second half of the season. Based on the 52,404 capacity used, it would mean Newcastle had 38,171 seats empty in the 2013/14 Premier League season.

What happens next season will be interesting to see.

2013/14 Percentage Of Seats Sold In The Premier League

    99.5% Arsenal

    99.2% Chelsea

    98.8% Spurs

    98.4% Manchester City

    98.4% Liverpool

    98.3% Swansea

    98.2% Manchester United

    97.9% Cardiff

    97.3% West Ham

    97.2% Fulham

    96.2% Newcastle United

    94.7% West Brom

    94.3% Hull

    94.2% Stoke

    93.4% Norwich

    93.0% Everton

    92.4% Southampton

    87.3% Crystal Palace

    84.3% Aston Villa

    81.9% Sunderland

Figures taken from respected website soccerstats.

Bar the bottom three, it looks as though most PL grounds have a 90%+ turnout which is quite decent.
I still think they should give ALL unsold seats to the armed forces to divvy up.
That would be a geat PR move.

    Nice idea mate
Just imagine how Ashley would implement that though, "yeh you can come in for free but i'll be slapping my sports direct signs allover the back of your uniforms"

I know what you mean fella.
The unsold seats don't attract an overhead other than the cost of posting a batch of tickets out so I don't know why all clubs don't go down this route.
Soldiers are paid sod all get put the modern day footballer to shame.
I'm sure I read somewhere that in a league somwhere a certain % of avaiable tickets were either free or drastically reduced to armed forces.. maybe in the US?

Sunderland just need to accept they built a stadium with too many seats in it.

They wanted to try and replicate the kind of attendances that we produce (despite no major trophy) and they have simply fallen short.

It's good to have ambition, but frankly, their fans would rather watch the games in the pub, a nearby pub! :)

It's better to have butts on seats than to have empty seats, and if we've got guys coming home from being on duty overseas, who better to give them to than them?

Think it's more like Sunderland supporters have more sense than to make the club a sitting duck for the likes of Ashley to cash-in on.

I know what their fans would actually rather do, but I'm not allowed to say because it makes them cry and get the mods in...

Newcastle logic at work again, so if Sunderland get rid of 20% of their seats they will be the best supported team in the league !!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to take into account Sunderland fans do not have the off field entertainment provided by Pardew
