Okay, he is not dead, just retiring

What were your favourite Alonso moments, good and bad, from the career of a driver who was considered by some to be the most complete driver on the grid, and by others to be an enigma of someone who should have done better than he did but somehow only got 2 WDC's in his illustrious career.

He'll have some time to put his feet up and relax for a bit, will do him some good

the Renault cheating debacle took the gloss off for me.

he's given mclaren far more service than they deserve.

clearly can't get a top drive for some reason therefore says **** it.

The memes were definitely the best thing.

Seriously though, he was someone that I lost a great deal of respect for in 2007 (*Don't mention 2007 Klaxon*) but who won a lot of it back by being such a relentless competitor. You could not help but admire him on the track.

But he was flawed too. It's a cliche that all great F1 drivers are ruthless and egotistical, but he was a team breaker if he didn't get his own way. And ultimately that's the reason he has nowhere left to go in F1.

If he goes to Indy I wish him luck though, I'd love to see him get the triple crown. With his talent and sheer relentlessness as a competitor he would deserve it.

I'm fairly indifferent to Alonso these days. He was a breath of fresh air when he arrived and dislodged Schumacher. However my opinion has dropped since, falling to it's lowest somewhere in 2010 to 2012 and then never really recovering.

I don't know what it is but I just find it so hard to root for him

As you may all know I'm a huge Alonso fan so this is a sad day to give up hope of another chance at the F1 title. I wish him all the best for his future adventures ahead.

I've supported him since watching him in a f3000 race and early days as the underdog in a minardi and Renault. In fact most of his f1 career he has been the underdog and has earned some outrageous results through his talent.

But sadly when he toppled Schumacher he then also stole the title of pantomime villain in the British press.

    Thanks for the memories Fernando!

Can he do Indy next season around the WEC program he's signed up for?

Could have had a whole bunch of records if he hadn't had the contract management skills of Alesi, not sure anyone really knows what happened at McLaren during spy-gate, but he came out looking the asshole. Too much verbal, all the radio message whining for the stweards benefit emanated from him. Might watch more Indy with him in it, wonder if he'll end up as popular as Mansell was over there.

Can't say I've been impressed with his recent attitude either. Says he's leaving F1 because it's boring and predictable.

He says this whilst at Wec silverstone where his car is 4 seconds a lap faster and he's clearly favoured within Toyota...
