Agreed. If he had left the field straight after being shown red he may well only be getting a 3 or 4 match ban. What happened instead was a total disgrace. The referee did very well to keep his cool - it can't be much fun to have a 6 foot 2 inch lunatic coming at you shouting all sorts of abuse in your face. I just hope the FA use this as an excuse to bring in more strict rules for players communicating with the referee.
It was a little push. Linesman didn't even break stride. He should have been cautioned for it IMO. It was nothing compared to Mitrovic.
Had Mitrovic simply shoved him, he'd likely get an enhanced penalty but nothing massive. Going nose-to-nose after he was shown the red is likely what'll really do his season in, though, because you can't explain that as him trying to get the ref's attention, he was clearly trying to physically intimidate him.
If Mitrovic was playing at grassroots level, the regulations recommend STARTING at 182 days suspension and that's just for the shove on the referee. I don't know what the regulations stated when Di Canio and Prutton committed their offences but if the FA really want to make an example out of Mitrovic he could find himself banned well into next season. If I were him I'd issue a groveling apology and plead guilty.
Brazil referee decapitated after stabbing player BBC. Happened in 2013. Punch up followed by stabbing followed by murder of ref followed by decapitation. Why didn’t fourth official step in?
Just read a short interview with Mick Channon, about the time England lost 2-0 in Rome, in 1976, and failed to qualify for the 1978 World Cup finals. He said that the Italians had a marked the English team so tightly that when he was leaving the pitch, at halftime, he turned to his marker and said “I’m going for a piss now. I suppose you’ll be coming with me”.
Important game this. Both nations will want to avoid the play offs so the two games against each other are key.
I'm England all the way when we play Italy, but i still love watching the Italian National Anthem as normally there is so much passion from the fans and players and it reminds me of my late mother who used sing it and cry whilst doing so every time it was on.
