In my opinion the 3 we brought in are all starters so whats not to like so far? Yes they could end up being pants but reality is they are top players who should do well in this league. Phillips price halves every few months and as he only had 2 years left….. Bring in a good striker and replacement for Phillips and Raphinha and Im happy
Morning all I think the club has done a good job so far. They have moved early and got 3 signings in and that is just what we have been crying out for. Phillips sold I have no problem with, and the price is just about right. I don’t see any problem finding a player to replace him. The only thing that puzzles me is the £5m for Gyabi. There must be some financial trickery involved with the Phillips deal. I guess we find out eventually. If Raphinha leaves then that would hurt the most. Because he will be so much harder to replace, at least in the price range we are operating in. But I have a feeling that we have players lined up that we will try and get that will be replacement for these players. Think we need somewhere between 5 and 8 players in depending on players out situation. In addition to the 3 players we have sign. I think we need an experienced goalkeeper (to help Meslier), LB, ST, a replacement for Phillips and a replacement for Raphinha.
Agreed, and isn’t there supposed to be some sort of premium on “home grown” players. Club should have told KP you can go but it’s 70 million or you can wait and see if they still want you in two years.
Phillips was awful last season under Bielsa, but actually improved in the last 3 or 4 games under Marsch. When Phillips got injured against Brentford in December, he had a 'Whoscored' rating of between 6.3 and 6.4. He finished the season in 9th place with 6.56
Seems like some are not happy unless the club is failing. For me all we need now is a striker to compete with Bamford and Joffy for the top spot. An experienced keeper to provide back up and advice for both Meslier and Klaeson. At least one more cm. Tyler Adams or Lewis O Brien would be perfect for me
Have we got a more balanced squad at the moment though? We sold. DM and brought a replacement in with Roca, we bought a RB meaning we have three at the club, we have one LB of questionable standard (unless you are counting Davis) and bought an upgrade for Klich (hopefully). We sell Raph and we still have a lot of wingers. You could also argue whether we have strengthened. Strengthening means keeping your best players and adding to them, not selling and hoping you’ve replaced with better.
So what. The % of games won when he’s played v when he hasn’t knocks all that subjective marking into a cocked hat.
Philips wanted to go to Man City, so that ties hands as far as negotiating a price goes. I'd say 45M is a fair one. Grealish went for more because he's a playmaker and for example England definitely play better when he's on the pitch. The longer left on KPs contract, the more the fee reflects buying that out. Every month he would have gotten cheaper. Yes, our win rate with him on the pitch was higher, but he's been off of the pace recently. He can be replaced. Raphinha is trickier to replace.
Afternoon all, I hope we have many less injuries next season, especially in defence so we have a firm base to build on. I think we've brought in more flair in the middle that we were crying out for. I think we'll get more out of James and Harrison with more targets getting in to the box. We were lacking that last year. Bamford coming back should also give our opponents more to deal with. I think with or without Raph we'll be more of a handful next season. Last season they just had to nullify Raph and we struggled to produce anything
Chelsea are in for Raphinha along with Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle! So only english clubs can afford him and only a handful of transfers throughout Europe exceeding £40m. Was a time when clubs refused to sell to teams in their own league, but now its all about cash and the only clubs who can afford it are our top 6 clubs plus Newcastle. Chelsea still have one player they may want to use in the deal, Pulisic. Mentioned over the weekend and again today?
