When you talk about underrated football players, Matthew Le Tissier is always discussed, why didn't he get more caps for England etc. However, vehicle Le Tissier may have been internationally underrated, he certainly wasn't by the Saints fanbase. Recent interviews with Dusan Tadic, looking at his assist ratio and ability since leaving or perhaps Steven Davis' unsung career made me wonder, who do you think is the most underrated player to Southampton fans who played regularly for the club?
Always thought that Claus Lundekvam was underrated by Saints fans while Dean Richards and Killer got most of the plaudits he was a constant factor and just as good as either IMO.
And I remember a lot of other teams fans saying we overpaid £1m for Rickie as he was a fat pie eating average player .......he didn’t turn out too bad
An obvious one for me is Guly. He's seen as a cult hero now but while he was here there were loads who didn't rate him.
Until a few months ago, Stuart Armstrong. On a national level, Jan Bednarek From recent history, I think David Connolly did a lot more for the team in the first part of the Championship season than many realised
What about Marsden? He didn't look like a footballer and was plucked from nowhere but had a good few years.
Cult hero though, so not really underrated. And what a partnership he formed with Bridge on the left.
It depends which audience you are looking at, when asking if they underrated a Saints player. My initial reaction to your first post was Saints fans. In which case, I'd never suggest Marsden as an answer. In my experience, if asked to name a best Saints side/squad from the past 25 years, many Saints fans (including myself) would have Marsden in the equation. I certainly think he's rated by Saints fans. Not in the same bracket as a Morgan or a Rickie, but certainly rated. Whereas if you asked a wider audience, Marsden would never get a mention.
