There can be little doubt that the EPL and Sky have carried out a very successful marketing campaign, but quantity and quality are different things. Take as an example newspapers. The two most successful by sales are the Sun and Mirror, far exceeding others such as The Times, Telegraph and Guardian. Or as another example, at one time Omo was the largest selling soap powder due to the advertising it received on TV. Today it doesn't appear in the UK and better marketing has shown other products far more popular where you can still buy it. Much of sport is sold very well these days, but go to an event and you have no idea if you will be thrilled with what you see as we were on Saturday, or bored to death. Once you have paid to get in you have no further say in the quality of what is served up, very much the same as a subscription to a TV channel. Say often enough that you are watching the greatest to sell your subscription and enough people will make it worth your while, until they cancel. After that you just move your advertising somewhere else and start again.

Ah, so you're not referring to success on the pitch - I didn't think you were. It couldn't be based on that because Man City have never won a European title (Ajax have 4) and Arsenal and Spurs fans were wearing flares the last time they won in Europe. Bearing in mind that all 3 have had less success on the pitch than they have had on their bank balance the question could be raised as to whether they have had value for money. I would say that the fundamental aim of a football club is to have their assets on the pitch and, in that context, both Seville and FC Porto have more European trophies (each) than those 3 put together. As I said the Premiership is overhyped !

The EPL is judged on entertainment, that is why it is the most watched league around the world.

The sky /BT EPL offerings have no shortage of people willing to pay to watch in the UK and around the world. It is a very successful product which is becoming even more popular. This financial success enables the EPL teams to attract the best talent manager and player wise.

That is an opinion. One of the companies that stream games sometimes shows the numbers watching the different games on offer. Quite often you will see other games in Europe are more widely watched than the EPL. Seeing as these streams are available worldwide, it throws doubt on what you believe.

I think you will find that this is as a result of a marketing campaign SH. With so many staggered kick off times the PL is bound to get maximum exposure. There was a move in Germany to introduce monday night games here but there was so much opposition that it was called off. Having a match on a Sunday or monday evening may increase overall TV figures but the fans who go into stadiums hate it. German clubs are more interested in those fans than in TV viewers.

The Spanish la Liga is arguably the most beautiful league in the world, with a free-flowing and aesthetic nature of the game. It naturally attracts some of the world’s most talented players who come to Spain to showcase what they can do on the pitch, and also for a chance at glory.

The top football league in Germany comes next on our list. The Bundesliga was founded in 1963 and is the most attended football league in the world. The average stadium attendance for the Bundesliga is 43,458, which is a figure that is much higher than that of the English premier league. The only thing is that the Bundesliga lacks the aggressive overseas marketing that other leagues have.

Quotes from one of your links SH. The first one says that the football is beautiful, and the second that no aggressive overseas marketing takes place. For the EPL it says that because of the marketing it has plenty of money. It doesn't suggest that it is the best product.

It plainly shows the EPL is more exciting and more in demand than lesser leagues in Europe and around the world. I'm very happy to pay (half price) for this superb product. I also subscribe to Murdoch's other excellent products, The Times / Sunday Times and talk sport radio.

Most Spanish players prefer the intensity, excitement and competitiveness of the EPL. The EPL would be the most attended in Europe if safe standing was allowed similar to Germany. It currently has the best attendance for the top flight since the 40's.
It is not surprising why almost all top French players play abroad, many in the EPL.

You really have boxed yourself into a corner SH. You have claimed that the Premiership is the best league in the World - that it is far superior to any other league for excitement and interest - that it is head and shoulders above anywhere else - and referred to others as the 'lesser leagues in Europe'. You have boxed yourself so much into a corner that the only thing which you can fall back on is TV viewing figures, which is not surprising seeing as how England stages matches as such antisocial times for stadium supporters simply in order to get on TV. Well Coca Cola is the most drunk soft drink in the World but all it tells us it that it is the most marketed - nothing more than that (horrible stuff used for cleaning old coins).

The viewing figures speak for themselves, the football public around the world prefer the EPL. It has the top teams, managers and players. It is also the place to watch the club world champions being humbled by grit, determination, organisational skills and fantastic players.

You are welcome to the second rate leagues in Europe.

The 'second rate leagues of Europe' <laugh> Since the inception of the Champions League in 1992, Spain has been the most successfull nation. The breakdown goes like this:
    Winners - 6 times (Barcelona x 3 Real Madrid x 3)
    Beaten finalists - 5 times (Barcelona x 1 Valencia x 2 Atletico Madrid x 2)
    Semi Finalists - 9 times (Barcelona x 4 Real Madrid x 3 Deportivo la Coruna x 1 Villareal x 1)
Quarter finalists - 11 times (all of the above at some time or other)
Last 16 - all of the above plus Athletic bilbao, Mallorca and Real Betis Seville

    All Spanish finals x 3

This is above the same success rate for the Premier League and includes more teams - namely 9 clubs have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League since its formation.

Hopefully Liverpool are getting defeats out of their system and get back to normal against Bournemouth on Saturday!

Impressive result by Newcastle at Championship league leaders.

That first goal by Chelsea made me wonder if Alison should be investigated for betting irregularities. He might well have a slip somewhere with William to be first scorer.
