Dalglish hasn't said much about it over the years but what he has said is that he was told he had to sort the finances out. He basically said the money wasn't there. He also tried to demand Shepherd retained Ferdinand when Shearer got injured Its clear he didn't want to sell him because he said we were a better team with him. The inference being of course he was only allowed to keep one. However Shepherd told him the risk of legal action was too great as they'd agreed the sale. I reckon Dalglish got a the **** end of the stick here and I wouldn't be surprised if Shepherd lied to him. The only one he said he did sell was Ginola because he wouldn't track back, had no interest in helping his teammates and also wanted to go to London. Probably just a different philosophy to the previous manager. He wanted all to contribute (tends to be how you win things in his defence) whereas Keegan liked them just to play with freedom.
The guy had a lot of quality, we totally wasted him, called him "insomnia" and instead of challenging him to be better just sold him on. Waste of talent in the end.
Young, talented Bobby Robson purchase that following managers didn't know what to do with. Add him to the list behind Bellamy, Dyer, Jenas, Milner, Hughes, Bernard, etc.
Paul Robinson, no not the keeper, a promising striker we signed from Darlington in 1998: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Robinson_(footballer,_born_November_1978) Famous for being included in the starting line up in Ruud Guillet's last game when Alan Shearer was left on the bench. Also famous for trying to take a penalty in the 8-0 win against Sheff Wed and getting told to **** off by Shearer who then took it. I don't think I've ever seen a player with no many different clubs, his serious career was basically over by the time he was 24 and playing for endless Mickey Mouse clubs, including 3 separate stints at Jarrow Roofing and 2 stints at Chesham.
