With Pulis now in charge of Wednesday, I fear it's likely to be another battle -- from the off too, unlike last night.
I've now added Forest at home as well, but yes, any Pulis side will be prepared to battle. With a more solid back line and new players like Gibson, Skipp and Sørensen prepared to give as good as they get, I think we'll manage even that.
I think it’s improved enormously. I can’t remember a time Krul’s distribution put us in trouble, even last season - admittedly I have not watched every minute of every match. That’s in stark contrast to some passes in our previous promotion season where he put our defender in a spot of bother and I remember Farke had to come out and defend him, saying Krul’s passes needed to be risky to help break the press.
There were some times last season but Krul has improved his kicking and throwing this season, especially since Gibson came in, as he has slotted into playing out from the back but can also carry the ball up the pitch without creating unnecessary risk, whereas Godfrey could come unstuck doing that. It also makes it easier for Handley, as does Skipp being available in midfield to pick up the ball and act as a pivot to distribute it.
Good results tonight with Bristol City, Watford, Swansea, Reading and Millwall all drawing. Boro were the only winners. Pass maps Vs Stoke: Krul Vs McGovern is a stark difference, although game state is of course a significant factor. Also highlights the progressive passing of Stiepermann, and how much possession we're squandering from corners (Buendia).
Thanks for that DH. Really interesting graphics. And people don't get why I rate Stiepermann so highly! Re. McGovern, most of the time Krul was on the field, Stoke hardly pressed beyond 10 or so yards inside our half. The commentators were mystified. Krul could have walked the ball forward and handed it to the FBs or Skipp for all the pressure being exerted. Very different after the second goal.
Also highlight that we always lost possession when we went long. Except one Buendia pass. That is a bad situation, puts immediate pressure on midfield, who would likely not be immediately in the necessary position to rebuff resulting attack.
I don't think anyone is being negative we are doing well and top of the league. However, we are missing 3 left backs 2 strikers 4 or 5 midfielders and our arguably most important player Krul. Even Pukki isn't fit we are suffering an injury crisis and some posters are concerned about our patched up team especially in goal . We all hope Mcgovern will play out of his skin and keep a few clean sheets but he looked a bit shaky when he came on and gives us cause for concern. His distribution was looked at analytically. It doesn't mean anyone hates him he's just nowhere near as good as Krul .
As Rob has pointed out, the variations here are well with the margin of error. Brentford have scored 18 and conceded 12, which suggests that they are creating chances but not taking them, while also conceding 2 more than we have (17/10). Blackburn have scored more goals than any team (25), but they have also conceded more than all but two other teams in the top half (15). Arguing that 18/12 or 25/15 is better than our 17/10 isn't born out by points gained. Would you really like us to go back to a 'we'll score more than you' approach? A comparison over the last 7 matches would show a very different outcome I suspect. There is a vulnerability when you're winning games by a single goal, but as DD says, you have to take into account our injury situation, which makes the last 7 games even more remarkable. I would also say that we have had more control over the play in those last 7 games, in part due to defending better, but also to the confidence that winning brings. For me the actual table outweighs the statistical one.
Mirror claim that Saliba is ready to take a pay cut of ‘up to £90k a month’ to secure a move in January https://the72.co.uk/202609/arsenal-man-linked-with-norwich-city-ready-to-take-huge-pay-cut/
Really jars me off big time when I get 'please disable adblocker' messages ....when it's already set to 'do not run on pages on this domain'
I'm not sure if we need another centre back or allowed any more loanees, it just tickled me that he would take a wage reduction of £90k a week to fit into our wage structure. I'm presuming we would be paying the rest of his salary. Madness
