Some of the defending and goal keeper was horrendous. Was that high standard back in those days?

No, this match is famous for the nasty tackles even by the standards of the day.

I think that game would have ended as a five aside these days. The referee's arm would be sore the next morning.

    its was cheslea ffs :)

no seriously though the pitch for an fa cup final at a place where games were rare was diabolical and you could see it hold up even on one bounce of the lump of a ball.

you can also see Bremmer was a diver who looked for reactions to get people sent off as well.

If you play back a early prem game out of the 90s say the standard is diabolical as well.

The keeper let one go through him. One on the line 2 guys managed to miss it (albeit the ball didn’t bounce) another one the chelsea defenders just fell to the floor in trying to tackle the guy <doh> Pretty shocking levels of play

dreadful keeping but then he'd no sticky gloves did he and the ball was probably like stopping a medicine ball it looked that heavy.

the two lads on the line were laughable but again the pitch was so bad the ball died

overall you've a bunch of lads playing in the equivalent of itchy wooly jumpers (my sunday league side had an old set from the 80s they tried to get us to use once and it was no ****ing way) wearing hob nailed boots off a working site, kicking a heavy leaden ball round a pig sty of a pitch.

plus one of them was cheslea. really you'd no chance of seeing a decent game.

    check out 1990.

bar utd still getting hammered by us the standard is still quite mixed

<laugh>....Yeah, the pitches were poor but the fouls were just appalling.

They were two of the better sides around back then, but not in that game.

It does make you wonder how fantastic the likes of Best, Marsh, etc would have been with today's ball, pitches, and rules. Bear in mind when they played tackles from behind were still OK, pitches were very poor (especially Derby County's which was a beach by mid winter with no grass showing), and the balls were a lot heavier.

Origi would have been seen as better than Pele if he played back then! <ok>

If he had today's sports science too, yes but in reality, he'd be a fraction of the player he is

Could not see Salah or Mane doing much on a pitch like this one, Stamford Bridge.

Shrewsbury Town's old pitch did not drain that well to be fair

At the same time defenders aren’t just falling over themselves, missing the ball on the line cos it doesn’t bounce and keepers are holding onto the ball because they have gloves these days.
