It's just that most of the time I don't care.

 

Crazy, mixed-up septic.

 

So... Talking about being mixed up... Trying something different at the new house. Being located on thick heavy hardscrabble red clay, we ended up having to have a fairly large drain field for our septic tank. 1000sqft... Ideally not supposed to walk over the drain field or water it.

Here, if you don't water grass it dies. So trying something a little different over the drain field. Planning on planting a yarrow lawn with a mix of red and white clover to provide natural nitrogen fixing and help the yarrow.

Yarrow is perennial, evergreen (in our climate), doesn't turn brown in mid summer (or mid winter) like the grasses adapted to our subtropical climate here do. Doesn't need watering, is more resistant to foot traffic than grass (although not supposed to walk much over drain field anyway) .

Bit of an experiment... If it doesn't work, I'll kill it and grow something else.


Was curious if any of you have tried growing a non-grass based lawn. Any experience with yarrow lawns?

 

yeah its pretty common in the UK to grow lawns of Alfalfa and it works really well

Chamomile lawns?

I do have a job where yarrow is a problem on one of the lawns, I'll probably end up weeding it out and re-sowing.

 

It rains here.... a lot.... so no we don't I would suspect. We grow a **** tone of grass and cut it and throw it in bins in a non ending cycle of environmental devastation

 

I saw chamomile as an option too but worried it wouldn't hold up to the dogs if the dogs ran on it.

Yeah, Yarrow can be quite weedy and take over. (Which is part of the appeal with me on this project)... Looking at photos of yarrow lawns they don't look quite as manicured as grass lawns but the appeal of once a quarter mowing instead of once a week sounds good to me.

Ironically it rains as much here as England... It just comes down over a much shorter period of time four inches of rain isn't very useful when it all comes in one week and then you don't get any more rain for a month. Being on well water and planning to get solar power (so water will be essentially free besides wear and tear on the pump) I can water whenever I like, but not supposed to water over the drain field. I will have a small grass lawn too... Most of the land though is wooded and I plan on leaving it that way.

 

Dogs could be an issue, especially if its an area they use often.
The English love their lawns its true, I'm mowing every 3 or 4 weeks atm. but once a week is essential in the spring/summer
