VAR is just as unreliable as the referees going on current experience. I think the Premier League should put the refereeing of matches out to tender then we might get the contract awarded to an Italian or German refereeing association and we would have decent refs at last. We bring in foreign players and managers so why not foreign referees?
Thanks mate. @Libby this is what I originally posted to you about VAR, as I know you love the topic: I just wanted to wade in really and say that I was originally always for VAR, but that's because I always thought it would improve after last season's mess. Maybe it still will in time, but I changed my mind this season when I didn't celebrate Walcott's goal at Wolves. I presumed Armstrong fouled their defender in the build up and was convinced it would be ruled out. Problem is I think we have to accept that it just won't be scrapped, regardless of how loud pundits or fans shout. That means we have to live with it. So the way forward is for them to make it less ****. Maybe it would help if they had a 30 second time limit, using no lines on the screen, and if they can't make a decision in that time with the naked eye then the on-field decision stands. The issue with that is that there will still be that element of doubt with a lot of goals and the majority of decisions that the ref makes will still be scrutinised by VAR. I think the only way you can keep VAR and reintroduce the passion of celebrating goals is to have 3 reviews per side per game. The time limit I mentioned above still applies and unless the review shows an error, the ref's original decision is final. Still not ideal by any means but it would at least take away the mess they're making of it now (IMO).
If you go back to the Roman times you’ll read an inscription from me saying that we should use the technology but not as a circus and give a 10 second review time. Let the game play on if the ball hasn’t gone dead, ditch the screens, ditch the monitor and have a referee in a box or studio connected to the referee and tell him he missed an obvious one. Nobody sees or hears anything. Check a penalty or an offside or a goal. Nothing else. Make the change if needed because it was an obvious **** up and if within ten seconds the game will hardly be affected. Longer than 10 Seconds then it isn’t an obvious errors and stick with original decision. Game will improve but won’t be perfection. 10 seconds It’s becoming my new 6 games
It's almost as if I was right all along. 95% of those surveyed said they feel it's ruined the spontaneity of goal celebrations. I remember being told on here that I was talking nonsense when I said that
Thicker lines are to be used by VAR for offside decisions next season. Apparently this is done in Holland and has been a lot less controversial so we shall see what happens.
