... but there's no thread suitable to post it on. Feel free to hoy anything on here that crosses your mind or whatever. A mate from Darlington texted from Appleby Horse Fair, he called in with his camper van on the way to the Lakes. He says the road was blocked and the police were holding back a mob of about 50 blokes in masks and carrying big sticks. His lass was frightened so he cleared off before he could find out what the crack was ... anyone know?
A lad I used to go to school with was a regular attendee at Appleby horse fair, he was a reet dodgepot.
The folk of Appleby must dread this time of year! The majority of the visitors are lawless savages with not an ounce of respect for the town.
Time it was stopped, not only do they clog up roads and lanes for days/weeks ahead of the fair the cost of policing and council clean-up afterwards must far outweigh what they bring to the area. Hasn't there already been several serious accidents involving horse drawn vehicles? Its an outdated relic lost in modern times.
On another subject did anyone here try and go to the Teesside Air Show last Saturday. Apparently it was utter chaos on the roads, my sister in law gave up after three hours and she only lives 15 miles away.
It was absolute carnage, i live about 5 miles from the airport. The airport was still open for buisness as usual aswell as trying to put on an airshow, so people that were trying to go on holiday etc, were forced to miss their flights. Some people abandoned their cars and walked up the A66 dragging their Suitcases behind them in hope that theyll make it on time to catch their flights. 20,000 people all decided to turn up at once to see a few Red Arrows and a few other aeroplanes. The whole thing was a complete shambles.
We came back from Portugal on Saturday midday, total mayhem at the airport. We were ok as we parked the week before, but folk who had booked taxis had to walk literally miles with their cases. It was impossible to get anywhere near the airport, all the roads In had at least a five mile static queue, and a lot of folk missed their flights. Total shambles. Edit: just seen Tees post, spot on.
I used to live in Appleby, always enjoyed the horse fair, went one time bought a horse for £25 took it back to the farm with good intentions, did bugger all with it for a year then sold it to Edwin Jackson the Appleby butcher, not to kill it he wanted to break it for his grand bairn. Went a couple of years ago and now all the shops are basically closed, they have chest freezers across the door so no one can get in and just serve people over the freezers.
On Monday I was told there was a pine Martin spotted in front of our house, normally I wouldn’t believe this but the couple who told me are quite Jenned up on wildlife. Bloody trouble is now I can’t go out the front without standing for half an hour looking up the bloody trees. On another note the ducks i reared 4 years ago are still coming back for their dinner every day
Very enjoyable mate, one of the best things you can do, I handed mine back a few years ago because I got a bigger garden.
You drive out of Appleby towards Brough turn up the hill and they hold it in the fields, loads of gypsy lads just form a circle and they bring a horse in and you bid on it. There are also loads of trotting races to watch a fair ground and also a big favourite is watching all the horses getting bathed in the river, there is also some extremely fit lasses especially if there’s a heat wave
