I see Kevin Ellison is still playing in L2 for Newport at 41. I seem to remember he didn't pull up any trees with us.
no idea where to put this. i'd start a new thread, but i know that's somehow worse than cooking and eating babies, so i'll leave it here and maybe nobody will notice. andy robertson has just set an all-time liverpool record. in his first 100 games for them, he was on the winning side 77 times. which is some going.
Top 30 record attendances in English football... 23. Hull City The Tigers saw an attendance of 55,019 at Boothferry Park (v Manchester United) – FA Cup sixth round (February the 26th of 1949) Their biggest attendance of the 2019/20 season was 24,109 (v Chelsea, 25 January) https://fanbanter.co.uk/top-30-reco...DsPiOEKbzLqSQ5AVttYySedGmtTB6SfZLczPdUn1NULbg
The record could have been broken over Christmas that season when City played at home to Rotherham. It as said the club sold 58,000 tickets for the match, which isn't bad for a Division 3 North fixture. But either a bus strike or no public transport on the day was blamed for only just over 50,000 turning up.
I believe that crowd of just over 50 ,000 is the record for a Division 3 North game and had been the top third tier crowd until a Sheffield derby in the 70 's or 80 's .
My husband was at that match played on Christmas Day and has posted previously that according to one data record source the attendance was 54,652.
In the video Farewell to Boothferry Park an old fella I think the then club secretary said that 54,000 tickets had been sold for the Rotherham game but due to a transport strike the attendance was 'only'49,655. Our highest league attendance was the following season when 50,103 saw us play Sheff Weds. The attendance for the Sheffield derby on Boxing day in the old third division was 49,309. I came across an amusing thread on Owlstalk where the supporters of the worlds biggest club gloat about having the highest third tier attendance until their statto points out that firstly Cardiff hold the record for the highest attendance in the third tier ( Third Division South) of 51,626 for their game against Bristol City in April 1947 and secondly our attendance for the Rotherham match was larger than theirs. They found it hard to believe .
He wasn't a City fan, that's for sure. If he ever was or even went to a home game during the time he was 'active' which was late 1968 to 1971 mid 72, I never saw him. He was formidable character in looks, full skinhead clobber, denims, sheepskin, Doc Marts etc, heavily tattooed. Height ? from memory 5' 10''. He certainly wasn't as tall as you Pete, then again not many were on the South Stand. I think some people get the original Sinbad mixed up with his younger brothers ( he had several), two I know did go to the odd game. The original Sinbad was a bit reclusive and I supposed he had to be because he got the blame for everything happening in the city centre in those days. He did frequent Monte Carlo which is where I knew him from. Says a lot about his reputation when people still talk of him nearly 50 years later. I went to his funeral about six years ago and I only recognised a couple of people there from the old days.
That's only partially true, as the reserves continued to play there. The last game was against Barnsley if I recall correctly with Isiaiah Rankin scoring the last ever goal. I know, because I was there, as Max Boyce would say.
